In October 2025, outgoing Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) asked the Virginia Board of Health (VBOH) to write a rule limiting transgender participation in girls’ sports and their use of girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. This was done to continue his expiring executive order issued in 2022. The VBOH voted unanimously (15 to 0) to implement this rule.

However, the VBOH ruling was soon terminated by newly elected Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D). She announced it during her appearance at the Virginia PrideFest held in Richmond on Saturday, Sep. 12, 2026. Per a Fairfax Republican Newsletter, in her speech at this event, she also said, “And I tell you I burst into tears because of the fact that I want to make members of the LGBTQ+ community know that you have a governor that values your community.”

Her display of tearful empathy got cheers at the PrideFest, as did her announcement that she had intervened to overturn the unanimous VBOH ruling. Not mentioned was that the state rulemaking docket showed that the effort was formally withdrawn months ago in July 2026. At that time, there was no news release, no hearing, no vote; just a line buried on a state regulatory docket that sat unnoticed until her PrideFest announcement.

Of related interest, Fairfax Co. News 7 reported that a boy was observed watching girls change in Fairfax County’s West Springfield High School girls’ locker room. When a girl complained, a teacher said there was nothing they could do. This example is becoming commonplace and indicates it is very likely this type of male invasion of girls’ private spaces will continue under Spanberger’s administration.

A second, more menacing example was earlier reported by Arlington Co. News 7. This time it was about a 58-year-old man (a known sex offender) who gained access to a girl’s locker room at the Washington Liberty High School pool and allegedly exposed himself to women and children. He told them he was transgender and the pool policy allowed him to use the girls’ locker room.

These two examples illustrate the Law of Unintended Consequences, where a feel-good, well-meaning policy can have disastrous results. Neither political party is immune to this law, but most Dems in recent years seem to have excelled at this one. Concerned parents need to consider this in the upcoming November election. They should also consider the influence from our long-serving Virginia senators, Mark Warner (D) and Tim Kaine (D). Like virtually all other Dems, both indicate they will vote to block any bill that will prevent biological males from participating in women’s sports.

However, this year Mark Warner is our only U.S. senator up for re-election. His challenger is Bert Mizusawa (R), a retired U.S. Army major general, former senior executive in the federal government, and a nationally respected leader in law, national security, and public service. Bert is the only choice that can offset Mark Warner’s U.S. Senate influence, which will continue fueling the waning transgender fad in both Virginia and nationwide, and continue reaping its unintended consequences for females of all ages. My only concern now is that, to date, I have seen zero political ads for Bert, and early voting in Virginia has started. You can learn more on Bert’s webpage. Do not sit this election out.
