Emma Cieslik, a ‘museum specialist’ at, not surprisingly, the Smithsonian, who claims to be Catholic, but not as loudly as she claims to be “queer, disabled and neurodiverse” in her social media bios, wrote this guest column for the National Catholic Reporter:
August is Transgender History Month, a time to reflect on the transgender people who have led the way for transgender people’s rights and who continue fighting for legal recognition and protection. This history is intimately tied to the Catholic Church, where a rich history of saints whom medieval historians now identify as transgender inspires a new generation of saints living among us.
Saints that transgress and explode gender binaries have existed since the beginning of the church itself — from people assigned female at birth who lived as men and entered monasteries (such as St. Babylas of Perge, St. Eugenios, St. Euphordyne of Alexandria, St. Theodore, St. Marinos, St. Pelagius and St. Hilarion), to saints who stated that God changed their gender (such as St. Onuphrius, St. Wilgefortis, St. Juana de la Cruz and St. Perpetua), and saints who were persecuted for cross-dressing (St. Joan of Arc).
But despite the wealth of evidence of holy gender nonconformity — stories of the saints’ lives remain some of the best preserved examples of medieval literature — this gender expansiveness was, and in some circles remains, largely ignored by scholars.
That’s all garbage history, none of it true, all of it a sad bid to staple the transgender ideology of today onto people who lived in the past and can’t speak for themselves. Praying to them for the wrong reasons, such as the normalization of the trans ideology seems downright sacraligious. I find her claim that Joan of Arc, my Confirmation saint, particularly offensive, as any serious study of St. Joan’s life would reveal that she didn’t cut her hair and wear men’s knightly battle armor out of a kinky-sexy-ironic fixation that regular cross-dressers have, but solely to prevent rape.
Mark Twain’s bio of St. Joan, the most thorough and accurate scholarly study of her, revealed a lot about what the French, British and Burgundian armies were like — which was barbarians.
Try raping someone wearing knight’s armor.
But what’s most disgusting is how counter to Catholic teaching and Western tradition these bizarre pretzel-twists of religiosity really go.

What’s more, the bishops have acted on this teaching, according to OSV News:
BALTIMORE (OSV News) — The U.S. bishops have approved an updated version of their guiding document on Catholic health care, with substantial revisions that include explicit prohibitions against so-called “gender-affirming care.”
Proposed updates to the “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services,” or ERDs, were overwhelmingly accepted during the Nov. 12 session of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ fall 2025 plenary assembly.
The bishops called it a “grave” violation of “human dignity.”
It’s so far from Catholic teaching, and so full of made-up wokester history it shouldn’t surprise anyone that she works at the Smithsonian, a place where wokester history is so distorted and wrong and invented President Trump had to put warning labels to the public in front of the building.
We see the same thing here.
And this is far from her nutty distortion for her own purposes of Catholic things.
Cieslik calls the wearing of the Miraculous Medal of the Virgin Mary, an important Catholic sacramental, mere jewelry that’s part of what she calls the “Goddess Worship Movement.”
Her Instagram features art like this, not for the faint of hearted — topless Virgin Mary, effeminite Christ figure, drugs, syringes, and vials of presumably hormone altering serums, prompting her to call trans bodies “at and of the crux of Christian divinity.”
Yes, she’s a lost soul, in some ways worthy of pity, putting her transgender politico-religion way above her Catholic one, and coming up with the most bizarre revisions of history and the faith as a result. Why, exactly, did the National Catholic Reporter print this clearly heretic rubbish that insults a lot of saints?
