I grew up in a suburban world, and the only time I ever saw life on a farm was sometime in elementary school when my class went to a local dairy and learned about the milking process. So, it was a complete shock to me, even as an adult, when I went to a farmer friend’s house to pick up my raw milk order, and she had to shoo the rooster away, because he would “rape” the ducks. I was horrified, though the ducks seemed fine—because they’re animals, with animal-level brain function.
I know some people find it funny when dogs hump each other, and maybe I’m just being dramatic, but I find it unsettling—again, because it’s just so animalistic. I’m sure the dog doesn’t feel violated, but I, with my human brain, feel secondhand violation.
This all brings me to my main point: Uncontrolled and brutish sexual urges are a hallmark of the animal world. My faith tells me that humans are unique beings with inherent value because we’re made in the image of God (which animals are not), but even Westerners not of my faith can recognize that there’s something that separates humans from animals, two of those characteristics being our human civility and self-control. We are distinct from the beasts, because we have the capacity to rise above beastly behaviors.
