There’s nothing toxic about these men’s masculinity

The left relentlessly hammers home a single message: Masculinity is toxic. Henry Higgins was a laughable, narcissistic misogynist when he asked, “Why can’t a woman be more like a man?” However, there’s nothing laughable about the leftist insistence that men must be more like women. That would be a terrible tragedy because masculinity at its best is a life-saving force.

Masculinity, properly channeled into honor, courage, and the chivalric notion of protecting people, is one of the greatest virtues of Western culture. It is why, in 1983 (and I’ve never forgotten this), 24-year-old Joe Delaney, a married father of three who was a running back for the Kansas City Chiefs, tried to rescue three boys from drowning in a pond, despite admitting, “I can’t swim good.” Nevertheless, he added, “But I’ve got to save those kids. If I don’t come up, get somebody.” Delaney saved one boy. Delaney and two other boys died.

If you type the phrase “man dies rescuing” in a search, you will have returned a never-ending list of men who, without a single thought, sacrificed themselves to save others—and not just family members but strangers, too. This is the same impulse that sees men like Pat Tillman leave a gilded life to serve America—and die doing so.

It’s why, although men were 75% of the passengers on board the Titanic, they made up only 46% of the survivors. “Women and children first” was their dying impulse.

Just yesterday, men in Houston refused to let three women remain upside down in a car that had flipped off an overpass. (Been there, done that, never want to do it again; still hate overpasses.)

This is a natural instinct that probably goes back to the whole survival of the species thing, given that you need more women than men to propagate a society. However, it can be bred out of people because we have plenty of societies around the world that view women and children as disposable. (E.g., this.) It’s only in men raised right that the instinct continues…and it starts very young. Here are some examples:

In 2020, Bridger Walker, six, saved his four-year-old sister from a vicious German Shepherd attack in Wyoming, incurring severe facial injuries. He explained later, “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.”

In 2023, Owen Burns, 13, used a slingshot to rescue his eight-year-old sister from an attempted kidnapping in Michigan.

Last year, Trey Howard, 10, sustained serious head injuries when a medical jet crashed in Philadelphia, and he hurled himself on top of his sister to protect her.

Now, we have a new young hero to add to this pantheon. The as-yet-unnamed 16-year-old was in his first season as a lifeguard at Santa Cruz’s Seabright State Beach. Santa Cruz is known for some of the best surfing in the world because there are some really magnificent waves. But magnificent waves also mean dangerous waves.

Our unnamed hero was told that a young swimmer (it turned out to be a ten-year-old boy) got swept out to sea in that surf, and he immediately plunged in after him. A videographer was on the scene and captured the fight that lifeguard put up against the waves. For more than two minutes, the lifeguard would not let the boy go, repeatedly inching back to shore as wave after wave swamped the duo. A second lifeguard, equally young, joined the fight, as did several others—all men—who tried to form a human chain.

Ultimately, everyone emerged without serious injury. Here’s the video:

If you go to the Carnegie Hero site, you’ll find endless reports of people rescuing complete strangers at great risk to themselves. What’s striking is that 91% of the honorees are men. This is what men do.

Or rather, this is what men raised in the Western tradition do. We will soon lapse into barbarism if we allow the leftists to destroy this uniquely male virtue, one that combines strength, impulsiveness, a charming superhero complex (which Jerry Seinfeld gently mocked), and a culturally inculcated chivalry.
