Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was reinstated Monday for the 2026 season after a Texas judge granted a temporary injunction blocking the NCAA from enforcing an eligibility ruling against him.

The case stems from sports betting activity that occurred during Sorsby’s college career. According to court filings and media reports, Sorsby admitted placing thousands of sports wagers totaling approximately $90,000 through accounts belonging to friends and family members. The NCAA determined that the activity violated its gambling rules and twice denied his requests for reinstatement.

Some of the wagers reportedly involved Indiana football games while Sorsby was a member of the Hoosiers program. However, there has been no public allegation that he wagered on games in which he personally played. Still, the NCAA ruled that the betting activity warranted pulling his eligibility.

Sorsby argued in court that he suffers from a gambling addiction and had entered a 35-day inpatient treatment program. His attorneys contended that preventing him from playing during the 2026 season would cause irreparable harm to his football career and future professional prospects.

A judge in Lubbock granted a temporary injunction restoring Sorsby’s eligibility while the legal challenge proceeds. The ruling allows him to practice and play for Texas Tech under certain conditions, including continued counseling and treatment requirements. He also will be required to sit out the first two games of the season.

The NCAA has maintained that its gambling policies are intended to protect the integrity of college athletics, and folks on social media seemed to agree:

Still, Sorsby had his supporters, who noted he bet mostly on other sports — and never on games in which he played.

While the immediate issue is the integrity of the game, the bigger problem is how ubiquitous online gambling has become and how addiction to it will impact society.
