Remember that great commercial “I love New York”? It was catchy and wonderful

These days, though, too many people are singing a different song.

We hear stories in Texas about “unaffordable” New York. We hear them from people who’ve moved here, from young people seeking a future to families transferred by their companies. They all tell you how expensive the Big Apple is and how they don’t regret leaving.

They’re not in a New York state of mind.

A new Empire Center for Public Policy survey of 600 New York state residents found that 33% are mulling packing their bags, and another 30% know someone who might.

Most respondents, 30%, cited taxes as the biggest issue pushing them out of state, with the cost of living, cited by 25%, coming in second.

Politics and governance (15%) and safety (6%) were the next biggest issues, and housing affordability (6%) followed.

New York state has lost nearly a million residents since Gov. Kathy Hochul took over in 2021, with many critics blaming her tax and spend policies for driving residents out.

Yes, people want out, and many are already out.

Here in Texas, we’ve had more conversations with Californians who moved here. It’s amazing how similar their stories are. They want out of their overtaxed state and businesses can’t handle all of the fees and regulations.

I remember talking with a fellow from Los Angeles about his move to Texas. He showed me his California pay stub, and I saw for myself that the bottom line was bigger in Texas.

On one hand, we love that all these new taxpayers and job creators are moving to Texas. At the same time, it saddens me that some states in our country have turned into unhospitable places to live, raise a family, or start a business. It all seems so insane, but then excessive liberalism is insane.
