I doubt Claudy Siar is open to reason, but for those who can still look at facts, analyze them logically, and reach a conclusion untethered to hysterical propaganda, I highly recommend Gerald Posner’s “Debunking the Lie of the Century.” In it, he offers a short primer for anyone who wishes to challenge the claim that Israel has been committing atrocities in Gaza, including actual genocide.
I cannot possibly do justice to what Posner wrote, so you really must read his essay, but here is a summary of his analysis of the many fallacies underlying the “genocide” claim:
- Genocide requires specific intent, not merely large civilian casualties. Under the Genocide Convention, the decisive question is whether Israel intends to destroy Palestinians as a people.
- The casualty figures and demographic pattern do not resemble extermination. In Gaza, only 3.4% of the population has been killed. That’s not a genocide.
- Israel’s conduct provides an obvious alternative explanation, which is that it’s trying to defeat Hamas. And indeed, its evacuation warnings, humanitarian corridors, vaccination pauses, ceasefires, hostage negotiations, and other measures indicate excessive care for civilians.
- Israel’s military actions are only in areas where Hamas operates, and are not against the greater Gazan, West Bankian, or other Arab populations.
- Simply stating that Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant are guilty of war crimes, as the UN Commission of Inquiry basically did, does not make it so. There’s a fundamental distinction between fighting a war brutally or unlawfully and deliberately attempting to eliminate an ethnic or national group.
- Ferocious statements from Israeli leaders were directed at Hamas. It was Israel’s critics who pretended that they were directed at all Gazans.
As history shows, one cannot let a lie sit. When that happens, it becomes integrated into the fabric of people’s views about the world, and creates a toxic “us” versus “them” that leads to very real genocidal madness. We’ve seen that happen repeatedly in the past 126 years, whether in Armenia, Europe, or Rwanda.
Celebrate the beauty of people coming together in peace, and always fight the Big Lie.
