In a desperate effort to further muddy the muck in which Anthony Fauci is squatting, the legacy media is doing its best to shift the focus from the American Mengele to the people who are asking the questions.

Why? They want to know. Why are the Republicans still badgering him with questions after he’s made it clear he won’t answer? What’s the point? Don’t they understand what “On the advice of my counsel, I refuse to answer on the grounds that it might incriminate me” means?
That’s the kind of question that answers itself. Quite apart from whether Fauci is entitled to 5th Amendment protections after being pardoned (he isn’t), the questioning serves one undeniable purpose: as a public shaming ritual intended to destroy the reputation of Anthony Fauci permanently. As such, it is not only perfectly acceptable, it is necessary.
The 5th has fallen from its honored status as an integral section of the Bill of Rights. It got that way beginning in 1947, when a group of communists – the noble and distinguished Hollywood Ten, as a matter of fact, tried to use it as a shield to cower behind. Called to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HCUA – there has never been a congressional committee called “HUAC”), they had agreed with their supporters to testify on the basis of 1st Amendment freedom of political opinion. But orders came from Moscow that they were not to admit to anything. So instead, they hid behind the 5th, astonishing the committee, angering their supporters, and convincing the country as a whole that, far from the political free-thinkers they had posed as being, they were in truth under the direct control of the Soviets.
A few years later, in 1950-51, the performance was repeated in front of the Senate investigatory committee on organized crime, chaired by Estes Kefauver. This time it was the Mafia, along with assorted other crime syndicates. They gave pretty much the same performance as the Hollywood Ten, if a little slower on the uptake. They did succeed in blunting the impact of the Senate’s investigation, though not as much as they hoped.
From that point on, the 5th was widely viewed as a tool for the benefit of commies and gangsters. It was taken as a given that anyone using it had something to hide, and could safely be viewed as guilty. Attorneys warned their clients against using it in trials – it would inevitably turn juries against them.

That has remained the case, more or less, for the past eighty years, though you might not think so to look at some people. Recently, an official of Act Blue (I can’t recall her name and can’t be bothered to look it up – she’s on Google), the Democrat money-laundering organization, used the 5th to answer a congressional committee in the same manner as the communists and the Mob. She did it with a wide smirk on her face, as if she’d come up with something incredibly clever instead of wrecking her organization and her career.
Which explains why the GOP used the 5th against Fauci. It is a means of punishment, a method of pulling him off his pedestal and permanently blackening his name. Back in the day, they put malefactors in stocks, where they were abused and tormented by the public. Today we use television.
Fauci repeated the phrase, “on the advice of my counselor…” no less than 111 times, each repetition digging himself deeper into ignominy. The peak was unquestionably reached with Bernie Moreno of Ohio, who treated Fauci with all the mockery and contempt he had coming with a series of questions that nobody but a fool could ever take as incriminating. “What color is your tie?” “What color is the carpet in front of you?” Each time, Fauci answered like a robot. Moreno concluded by telling him to his face that he deserved prison.
It may well be that Fauci will never spend a day behind bars. He exists at least to some extent on the fringes of the elite level, and they know how to protect their own. But even so, it’s over for him. He has been humiliated before the entire country. That will be his image and legacy from here on. No longer the Left’s shining knight on a white horse, the man with a halo on the cover of Time magazine, the man wearing hipster shades next to his pool, like an A-list Hollywood producer. He is the face of COVID, and nothing more. The 5th won’t help him with that.
