Am I just naive? I honestly don’t remember a time when July 4th was so partisan and political. Again, maybe I’m naive, but I remember the Fourth as a celebration of the U.S. rather than a day to remind everyone how much you hate the incumbent president.

Something else bothers me. Why are so many people down on the country? I am not, but some people are. Let’s check this out from Jonathan Draeger on Thursday:
On the eve of America’s 250th anniversary, the country is confronting a troubling contradiction: A historic national celebration is approaching just as pride in being American has fallen to its lowest level on record.
According to the latest Gallup poll, only 33% of Americans say they are ‘extremely proud’ to be American. This is the lowest share to say they are extremely proud since Gallup began asking the question in 2001, and far below the 70% peak recorded in 2003.
The decline has been driven almost entirely by Democrats and independents. In 2001, 54% of Democrats and 46% of independents said they were extremely proud to be American. In the latest poll, just 14% of Democrats and 28% of independents say the same.

I don’t get this. Back in the Obama or Clinton years, I was not a supporter of the man in The White House. At the same time, I separated my feelings about those two presidents from July 4th.
Somehow I was able to get politics out of my head for one day, enjoy a cheeseburger, catch the fireworks at the baseball game, and put politics away for a bit.
So what’s wrong with those that say they are not proud of the USA? Maybe they should try living somewhere else, and come back when they grow up.
