Greenland, long claimed by Denmark, is a key to U.S. security. To the amusement, dismay, and outrage of leftists at home and abroad, Trump moved to secure the island nation at the start of his term, threatening to annex it if need be. Now, after two years of Sturm und Drang, Trump has announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that gives the U.S. all it wanted in terms of security.

On September 18, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States, Denmark, and Greenland had reached an agreement giving the U.S. permanent rights over security matters on the island.

He was right to do so. Greenland’s strategic importance has grown over the years. Its location means it controls the Arctic sea lanes, it has vast reserves of critical minerals, and it serves as a vital part of the early warning system for U.S. missile defense.
The Greenland agreement announced by President @realDonaldTrump is not about real estate.

It is about strategic geography.
Its implications extend across five critical fronts:
• ARCTIC SECURITY: A stronger U.S. footprint reinforces the northern defense of North America and…

… the North Atlantic.
• RUSSIA & CHINA: Greenland becomes an increasingly important strategic barrier to Russian and Chinese military and economic expansion in the Arctic.
• MISSILE DEFENSE: Its location strengthens early-warning, surveillance and the infrastructure relevant to America’s next-generation missile-defense architecture.
• CRITICAL MINERALS: Greenland holds significant mineral resources at a time when Washington is working to reduce strategic dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains.
• ARCTIC ROUTES: As the Arctic becomes more economically and militarily important, Greenland provides extraordinary geographic leverage between North America, Europe and the Arctic Ocean.
The key point is simple:
Greenland is no longer peripheral geography.
It is becoming one of the central strategic positions in the competition for Arctic security, critical resources and the defense of North America.

One of Trump’s first acts in his second term was to offer Denmark the chance to sell Greenland to America, an offer accompanied by a threat to take the island by force if necessary:

Make an outrageous demand, then settle for what you really wanted.
When Trump tried to buy or annex Greenland, Europeans (esp. Danes) were furious.
A year later, we have an agreement giving us exclusive military access.
Which is what we wanted all along. https://t.co/CnWHj087Om
To summarize this agreement:
1. The U.S. assumes full control over Greenland’s security from foreign threats, including the right to take all measures necessary to secure U.S. assets on the island.
2. The United States has the right to establish and expand permanent military bases on Greenland as it deems necessary, without any veto right for Denmark or Greenland.
3. The U.S. will have permanent overflight rights.
4. All non-NATO countries are barred from establishing a military presence on Greenland, and the U.S. will have the right to veto any proposed deal that would allow a non-NATO country to make “sensitive investments” in Greenland, such as in telecommunications, undersea cables, ports, critical minerals, and similar dual-use sectors.
5. The agreement’s terms are permanent.
6. In return, the U.S. recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland and upholds the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.
This is everything the U.S. wanted. This is a huge win for the U.S. and for President Trump, every bit as much as it is for Greenland’s security and that of NATO countries.
