One of the tragedies of blacks in America is their extraordinary loyalty to the Democrat Party. Few seem to recognize the peculiar dynamic involved: The Democrat Party desperately needs black votes, yet too often its activists speak about black Americans in ways that reflect the unbelievably plantation-style soft bigotry of low expectations.

A recent tweet has resurrected an old Ami Horowitz interview at UC Berkeley, where he asked a group of white, left-wing college students whether blacks face particular hurdles when it comes to voting. Their answers are breathtakingly paternalistic.
Again and again, these students assume that black Americans lack the knowledge, resources, or ability to do things that they themselves take for granted. An Antebellum plantation owner would have spoken in the same terms about his slaves’ intelligence and abilities.
Here is the original Ami Horowitz video:
Here are some of the key quotations from that video:
- “I feel like they don’t have the knowledge of how…how it works.”
- “For most of the communities, they don’t really know what is out there just ’cause they’re not aware or, like, they’re not informed.”
- “These type of people don’t live in areas with easy access to DMVs or other places where they can get identification.”
Those statements stand in stark contrast to responses from blacks living in Harlem:
- “Why would they think we don’t have ID? That’s a lie.”
- “Everybody that I know have ID.”
- “Everybody has access to the internet. Even a little kid can figure out how to work the internet.”
Some of the “white responses” have has now resurfaced in a post from Wall Street Apes, which excerpts some of those statements and then compares them with actual data. Among other things, it turns out that blacks have essentially the same access to the internet as whites.

Multiple white liberal women are asked how Voter ID ‘inspires racism’
– They say black people don’t know how to go online and use the internet
– Black peoples don’t have data for their smartphones
– Black communities don’t know how to get the… pic.twitter.com/wqb4W107RI
…information on how to get an ID
– Black people are at a disadvantage for voting backside you can’t vote if you’re a felon
This is just false
– 94% of black adults have access to the internet
– 91% of black adults have access to a smart phone
Black people have access to all the same things as white people
Who knew?
One only has to spend a few minutes on TikTok, X, YouTube, or any other major social-media platform to recognize the absurdity of assuming that blacks are somehow unable to use the internet, whether to find information, obtain identification requirements, navigate government services, or make their political opinions heard.
But there is a more complicated truth buried beneath the Berkeley students’ condescension: Too many black Americans remain politically trapped within the Democrat Party and the institutions surrounding it.
Part of this is cultural and historical—the New Deal and LBJ’s Great Society legislation locked in black loyalty in a way even the Republicans’ abolition of slavery failed to do.

Part of it is the Manichaean political narrative that divides the parties into good and evil while largely erasing their complicated histories—including the Republican Party’s central role in emancipation and Reconstruction and the Democrat Party’s long association with slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow.
And part of it is simply the powerful human tendency toward groupthink: People tend to adopt the political assumptions of the families, communities, institutions, and cultural figures around them.
Into this environment steps Nicki Minaj, one of the most prominent black entertainers in America. To her credit, and showing great courage, she has increasingly shown a willingness to challenge political orthodoxies that many celebrities would never dare question.
🚨Wow Nicki Minaj just dropped truth bombs on the Democrat party and how they treat the black community.

…“We’re not allowed to voice concerns, to make an argument as to why we don’t like a particular candidate.”
“They’re seeing in real time, if they do, what happens to them. Smear campaigns and just outright nasty behavior from these adults. It just doesn’t look good.”
“So the Democrats kind of have been just digging their own grave in that way.”
It’s so true, Democrats only care about them for their vote. Thank you for speaking truth @NICKIMINAJ
Considering Minaj is “one of the most influential rappers if all time,” it matters that she is rejecting the idea that black Americans owe automatic allegiance to one political party. She is urging people to think independently rather than allowing politicians, activists, or cultural gatekeepers to tell them what they are supposed to believe.
If Minaj can shift just a few votes in the midterms, when only the passionate few vote, she might shift the election’s entire trajectory. She will be as important in her way as Elon Musk has proven to be.
