I’m not sure if he said it first, but Mark Steyn probably said it most clearly: Demographics is destiny. A society that doesn’t reproduce is going to perish. Unless it replenishes its population through immigration, in which case, it’s going to be a very different society, and almost certainly not one that nations’ founders ever envisioned. That’s the reality of contemporary Europe, including England, and it’s not pretty, as Matt Goodwin reports:

According to new figures from Eurostat, the people of Europe are experiencing the most profound demographic shift in their history. Between 2010 and today, in only 16 years, the number of foreign-born residents in Europe rocketed from 40million to more than 64million. In other words, Europe’s ruling class added 24million foreign-born residents in only 16 years, with nearly three-quarters coming from radically different cultures and nations.
The changes in specific nations are striking. Between 2015 and 2024, Germany’s immigrant population exploded from 11 million to more than 17 million. In Spain, it surged from 5.9 million to close to 10 million.
As in the UK, immigration is now the only reason Europe’s population is growing. Why? Because Europe’s people are no longer reproducing themselves naturally. Europe has now recorded more deaths than births every single year since 2012, with Latvia, Bulgaria and Lithuania suffering the sharpest falls.
Last year, in just one year, Europe’s natural population collapsed by 1.3 million, while net immigration added 2.3 million.
The birth replacement rate remains at 2.1children per woman, but that’s not happening. Europe’s rate is now 1.34, and in the UK, it’s 1.39, and 40% of all kids have one or two foreign-born parents. Spain is 1.10, Poland is 1.14, Italy is 1.18, Ireland and Sweden are 1.4, and France is 1.56. Unless their women begin to reproduce at a rate of at least 2.1, Sweden will no longer be Swedish, nor will the rest be recognizable as a native population. The decline is happening fast:
Between 2010 and 2024, in just 14 years, the share of foreign-born people in Germany rocketed from 12.9 percent to 21 percent. In Austria, it is 22 per cent. In Ireland, it is 23 percent. In Sweden, it is 21 percent. In the UK, thanks to the ‘Boriswave’, it is 20 percent. In Spain, it’s 19 percent. These are all record highs and point to a continent that’s being transformed in terms of both its demography and culture.
Alarming too is that European nations are granting citizenship to people from very different, often hostile, cultures with no intention of assimilating or even learning the language.

In Vienna, for instance, 42 percent of all pupils at state schools are Muslim, while in Berlin, Hamburg, and other parts of Germany more than half of all school pupils are migrants or the children of migrants (like parts of the UK).

Muslim immigration has skyrocketed, and immigrant rape gangs roam the streets. The UK has an insane rate of gang rape, and the police ignore it and harass women who dare to report rapes. The same is true of Sweden, where hand grenade(!) attacks have become common. Wherever there is substantial Muslim immigration, there are “no go” zones for police, where Sharia rules. Importing violent, medieval immigrants determined to conquer their adopted lands turns out to have rather severe consequences for the conquered. It would be impossible to reestablish the rule of law without requiring the police to cause severe bloodshed, so squeamish politicians watch their cultures disintegrate.
As European populations age, the problem worsens:
Look at Poland, for example. While Poland’s been one of the most vocal critics of mass immigration, between 2005 and 2025 it also experienced the sharpest increase of all European nations in the share of pensioners, which rocketed from 13 to 21 per cent. If the likes of Poland cannot find a way of boosting the fertility rate, for how long will they be able to resist the same demographic pressures that are radically reshaping other nations?
At this rate, it’s not going to take long for Europe, the birthplace of the Enlightenment, to regress to the Dark Ages, full of people incapable of building and maintaining the modern world and forever expecting increasingly old populations that know and can do such things to provide for them.
Again, this is particularly dangerous where Muslims overrun a nation, because their goal is never assimilation, but conquest. Once their populations are sufficiently large, they don’t build but destroy and rule the rubble.
It’s tempting to say this is civilizational suicide, but it’s not. It’s an intentional failure of the people who swore to defend and maintain their nations, not that the result will differ.
