Conservative commentators have warned repeatedly what would happen if Democrats achieve full control of Congress this fall (God forbid). They will spend the remaining two years of President Trump’s term working 24/7 to undo the progress he has made and to block him wherever they can. Destroying his presidency will prepare for a 2028 takeover of the White House. Once that happens, we can expect this parade of horribles:

  • Immigration controls will be eased or eradicated.
  • Congressional funding for the Southern wall will be cut.
  • Economic policies such as tariffs will be gutted.
  • Election safeguards will be eliminated.
  • Inflation-generating spending levels will be instituted.
  • Domestic energy production will be cut.
  • The Green New Deal will be put on steroids.
  • Ukraine will get more billions.
  • The mullahs in Tehran will breathe a huge sigh of relief.
  • Support of Israel will be all but eliminated.
  • The legal system will continue to be flooded with left-wing judges.

Let’s not overlook a highly significant change in the political landscape: The emergence of the DSA as a driving force in the Democrat party. If the Democrats do make it back into power (God forbid), the DSA will surely claim that its success at the polls helped put them there. These folks take no prisoners. They are not interested in negotiating. It’s their way, or the highway. Hakeem and Schumer will increasingly find themselves dealing with DSA leaders—Stalin, Mao, Castro types in spirit, if not yet in power.

So what?

If you think the two impeachments against our president were absurd, which they were, I have news for you. Actually, I have a name: Andrey Yanuaryevich Vyshinsky (1883–1954).

Vyshinsky has been accurately described as a rat in human form, the ultimate apparatchik. He achieved fame as manager of the 1930s Moscow show trials, when he was Procurator General of the Soviet Union. After World War II, Stalin sent him to Romania, where he helped impose Soviet control. Two years later, the Communist regime subjected Iuliu Maniu—whose significance in Romanian history is comparable to our Founders’—to a Soviet-style political trial. Maniu eventually died in prison in 1953.

Are there Vyshinsky types here? You bet. Letitia James provides a useful warning of what politically driven law enforcement can look like. She campaigned on aggressively pursuing Trump and later brought the civil fraud case against him. That is obviously not the same thing as Stalin’s Moscow trials, but the underlying temptation is worth remembering: Once legal proceedings become instruments of political combat, the distinction between prosecution and political theater can begin to blur.

CNN & company would provide 24-hour coverage, trotting out Democrat legal “experts” who would assure Americans that the proceedings were all perfectly Constitutional. The New York Times’s notorious Moscow correspondent Walter Duranty thought Vyshinsky did a great job back in the day and supplied approving coverage of Stalin’s show trials. One suspects his journalistic descendants would know what to do.

If the GOP objects beyond writing “strongly worded letters” and filing a complaint that gets to the Supreme Court (fat chance), Roberts will make sure it goes nowhere.
