In recent days, it almost seems as if the Democrats are deliberately taking down the quality of their candidates and the level of their behavior and rhetoric in order to lower standards to a point where they really no longer have to put in the hard work of finding adequate candidates or assuring that their speech and actions are acceptable to a rational, decent American electorate.

How else do you explain Shelly Headen, who, while standing in the furnace chamber at Dachau, not only suggested concentration camps for people she disagrees with, but did it with a smile? How do you explain Abdul Mohammed el-Sayed, who spent his entire primary campaign attacking Jews and praising terrorists, all of this so blatantly that the party was forced to tell him to lighten up? (Though at this point, we’re told that the Dems are “starting to warm up to him.”)

The latest evidence for this comes from Rep. Dan Goldman, the Democrat representing the 10th congressional district in the U.S. House. The House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, on which Goldman sits, held a hearing on Tuesday concerning sanctuary laws, with particular reference to the savage crimes committed by illegals in sanctuary cities. The subcommittee was questioning Sheriff Frederick Ashkar II of Broom County, NY, who has had some experience with the problem.

Goldman’s turn rolled around, and he scarcely finished his opening statement when he immediately began a clumsy, obvious, and blatant attempt to discredit the sheriff by bringing up an unrelated decade-old scandal from the period of the “Me Too” scare.

Goldman opened up with this: “Every day you wake up, to stand up for families whose children have been murdered, correct?”

So far so good. But then Goldman makes a 180 and continues with this: “Now in 2016 you had sexual relations with a woman named M***** M****** at the Turning Point resort casino, correct?”

This, evidently, is one of those tales that was so commonplace before “Me Too” collapsed under the weight of its own dishonesty: a romantic assignation that turned sour in the hours following, when the woman, feeling regrets, struck back with unfounded accusations, because it’s always the man’s fault. It obviously went nowhere, since Ashkar is now sheriff. You may be wondering what any of this has to do with sanctuary laws, illegal immigration, or crime, but you won’t get an answer, because there isn’t one.

In ancient days, a witness confronted by a congressman in this manner would have simply cowered in silence before the majesty of the United States Congress. But the days, they ain’t ancient no more, and Sheriff Ashkar wasn’t having any. He replied:

“Only a degenerate politician like you would bring up this matter.”

Goldman tried to cut him off with: “Yes or no. Did you?” But the sheriff simply repeated his statement. Goldman pressed on with more questions, to which the sheriff answered:

“You really should be ashamed of yourself to bring something like this up at a hearing like this…”

Goldman made a wild effort to establish how the accusation was relevant to the hearing, which the sheriff effectively ignored. The sheriff at last apologized to the angel families present for having to listen to Goldman.

Finally, Goldman achieved the climax that might have been expected: he was “sorry” that his Republican colleagues had brought Sheriff Ashkar in to “represent law enforcement.” So it was the GOP that was the target all along; the sheriff was simply the means.

What’s telling is that at no point during the foregoing did subcommittee chairman Tom McClintock intervene. Not an admonition was spoken, not a gavel was heard. Goldman had dug his hole and then leapt in, and McClintock was happy to see him fall.

Goldman is all too typical of the current run of Democrat in his sleaziness, malice, and spite, and in not having enough of any of those qualities to satisfy his constituents, who just nominated a DSA clown to replace him. It’s only going to get worse, and the voters of the 10th District, which covers Lower Manhattan and Queens, have got it coming.
