San Diego County supervisors unveil plan to hike taxes on locals so that Mexico can keep sending its sewage

Some ideas are so bad, they’re … awful.

But they do tell a lot about how Democrats ‘think.’

Take this one, reprinted from the San Diego Union-Tribune:

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to launch a new phase of the county’s fight against Tijuana River pollution, approving funding to plan a new treatment system to capture sewage from the river itself and to advance a permanent fix at a toxic air pollution hot spot in South County. Supervisors voted 4-1 to approve the Tijuana River Capture and Cleanup Initiative, with Supervisor Joel Anderson opposed. A second measure funding infrastructure at the Saturn Boulevard hot spot passed unanimously. The capture and cleanup measure directs the county’s chief administrative officer to begin an 18-month project development and engineering analysis, funded by $1.8 million from the county’s Unlocked Reserves Framework, according to a county staff report. It also converts the board’s ad hoc subcommittee on the crisis into a standing committee with permanent oversight. A separate measure allocates $4 million to advance design, environmental review and permitting for a permanent box culvert project at Saturn Boulevard, where hydrogen sulfide levels have reached 16 times the state air quality standard. That work will proceed alongside a $2.5 million interim pipe-extension project already underway, with construction anticipated in 2027.

Sounds good, until you read the fine print, which is either absent or buried deep in most media outlets:

Much of the long-term funding for the initiative could come from a proposed countywide sales tax measure headed for the November ballot. The measure, which qualified after organizers submitted about 151,000 signatures, would raise the countywide sales tax rate from 7.75% to 8.25% and is projected to generate $360 million in new revenue in its first year, with 22.5% dedicated to Tijuana River Valley sewage mitigation.

Aguirre said that revenue, if approved by voters, could be used to bond for up to $1 billion in infrastructure funding.

So they want San Diego to pay for the Tijuana sewage crisis through yet another tax hike instead of Mexico. And the money collected from the sales tax hike, which will be permanent, won’t go to this vaunted sewage treatment plant, which seems redundant given the ones the federal government is working on, it will only be used as leverage for putting the city in debt to the tune of $1 billion, through the issuance of bonds — and then they can start the sewage treatment plant.

What’s more, the sewage treatment plant will get only a fraction of the big new sales tax haul, a mere $80 million out of $360 million expected to roll in (a big ‘if’ given that tax hikes affect spending) and the rest will go to other pet projects in the appealingly titled ballot measure titled: The “Protect San Diego County Health and Safety Act.”

County supervisors, notable Paloma “stolen land” Aguirre and Terra “sleepy” Lawson-Remer, insist it’s the taxpayers’ jobs to pay for what Mexico sends over:

“We can’t control what happens across the border, but we can control what we do on our side of it,” Aguirre said.

So Mexico pollutes, we pay for it, and Mexico pockets the profits. 

Sound like an incentive for Mexico to clean up its act? Actually, it sounds like a license for Mexico to just keep on doing what they are doing, and heck, expand the operation because gringo across the border can always be taxed more to clean it up for them.

What these jackasses should be conditioning their plans on is withholding water sales from Otay Mesa to Mexico as leverage, not hiking taxes on Americans. And if they want to really get Mexico’s attention, they should be talking about building a dam to ship the sewage right back to where it came from. I’ve heard from engineers who say that yes, it can be done. Or maybe they can just send Mexico the bill instead of raise Americans’ taxes to pay for all their doings.

But they aren’t about solving crises or holding Mexico accountable.

Aguirre, for one, a former Imperial Beach mayor, has been at this for a dozen years and got elected as a beach conservationist, but the problem has only gotten worse as she effectively institutionalized the problem with measure after measure creating entrenched special interests, roughly parallel to how the homeless-industrial complex took over Los Angeles and San Francisco. The problem just continues even with all the layers of ‘help’ lavished on it.

She’s also been accused by this poster of creating a feelgood law that actually imported Mexican sewage into the U.S.

So now she wants a permanent tax hike on Americans, not Mexicans, to ensure that Mexico can just keep polluting, and the proposed plant will stay a proposal on paper just like the bullet train. 

So much for ‘affordability.’ How convenient this sewage issue is for this kind of Democrat.

Any question that this entire crew needs to be thrown out? At a minimum, the public should not approve any new tax hike that will push sales taxes above the already nightmarish 7.75 percent level. Ameticans should not be paying Mexico to pollute our beaches, rivers and shorelines.
