One of the ways Islam makes inroads into Western society is to demand accommodations for its stringent non-Western cultural behaviors: women must be covered lest Muslim men can’t fight the urge to rape them; mosques must be allowed to broadcast their five-time-daily prayers or else it’s religious discrimination; stores selling sexy clothes must allow mood-killing, hijab-clad sales clerks; grocery stores with Muslim clerks may not sell pork; public schools must start serving halal food; and taxi passengers must refrain from carrying alcohol (even in closed contains).

Most recently, in Texas, the two major airports—George Bush Intercontinental and Dallas-Fort Worth—were on the verge of using taxpayer money to remodel rooms into foot-washing stations for Muslim prayers. The only thing that stopped this from going forward was Gov. Greg Abbott’s intervention:

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday directed a review of state grants to entities operating two major Texas airports over religious accommodations after Dallas Fort Worth International Airport said it would no longer move forward with a proposal to install Islamic washing stations.

Abbott said the state will review grants to entities operating DFW and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston for possible revocation and denial of future funding. He also referred both airports to the U.S. Department of Transportation for investigation.

Gov. Abbott stated plainly that the state cannot accommodate one religion over another:

Government-owned airports cannot favor one religion over all others.

DFW plans to install Islamic wudu washing facilities are illegal. I’ve directed a review of all state grants to both airports for possible revocation, and referred DFW & IAH to USDOT for investigation.

Yeah! What he said. This is especially important with Islam. When I think of how delicately (at first) it moves its sharia program into the West, I always find an analogy in Lord Peter Wimsey’s describing a social climber as an ampelopsis:

Bit of an ampelopsis, what?’

‘Ampelopsis?’

‘Suburban plant that climbs by suction. You know — first year, tender little shoots — second year, fine show — next year, all over the shop. (Dorothy Sayers, Lord Peter Views the Body)

Thinking about it, though, while the swift growth is accurate, the analogy fails because the social climber doesn’t want to destroy the society he enters. Perhaps it would be more accurate to describe Islamic tactics in the West as a form of cultural kudzu, which moves in, covers everything, and inexorably drags it down.

Texas is lucky to have Gov. Abbott. Massachusetts’ residents, however, may have to face the Islamic kudzu without gubernatorial help. The legislature is currently contemplating a permanent “Commission on the Status of People Who Practice Islam.” The commission, if created, is explicitly intended to promote Muslims for work in the Massachusetts government.

So far, Gov. Maura Healey, who is notoriously leftist, has kept quiet. Her silence may be helped by the fact that she gets to appoint two members of the proposed eleven-member commission.

When a religion begins to demand preferential treatment from governments and in public spaces, the only answer can be “no.”
