What if the current unrest in the country leads to a second American Civil War? How would that play out in the modern era? Let’s allow ourselves a daydream — or nightmare — about how it might go.

Granted, there wouldn’t be battles like those that were fought in Gettysburg or Vicksburg, but it’s conceivable each side would come up with their own flag design, since symbols are essential. The Right might construct a “freedom” flag, which would stand in stark contrast to the flag of the Left: a raised fist decorated with small anarcho-feminist and transgender icons — with the middle finger extended.

The first shot of the new civil war will not be fired at Fort Sumter, but could ring out during one of the nation’s many anti-ICE demonstrations. Leftist warriors will drive their SUVs and Honda vehicles into ICE agents with a sense of furious self-righteousness, only to find themselves instantly transported to the afterlife.

Consumed by their love of open borders, blue state migrant activists could ignore reports of rape gangs pillaging their daughters and granddaughters. Some will urge tolerance as they chalk the violent incidents up to “valuable cultural differences,” the same way they will dismiss the execution-style murders of their gay sons and friends by Berlin-style ISIS killers.

The Left will be taken by surprise when President Trump might declare martial law. They could long for the old days when the worst punishment they received was a blast of pepper spray or a slap on the wrist.

In blue cities, the Left could meet openly in Quaker meeting houses, Unitarian churches, and city-owned buildings. Formerly benign groups like Nuns on the Bus might be renamed Nuns with Guns, as the streets of New York and Philadelphia could become like armed camps.

At night, armies of Covid-masked leftists in tattoos, with multi-colored hair, and wearing yoga pants will scurry from alley to alley in defiance of the new federal curfew laws. The martials could catch many of the curfew breakers, remove their Covid masks, and order them to read the books of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

Citizens not involved in the new civil war could stay put in their houses after sundown. These people will be called “Middles,” because they admire some things about the Right and some things about the Left. While the Middles might support some leftism, they will continue to have issues with abortion, gender ideology, and the transitioning of children. Dressing up their two-year-old daughters as “walking vaginas” and having them scream “f-ck you” at supporters of the president at a No Kings event will not be on their bucket list.

Violent skirmishes in the streets of the city would be common, such as homemade explosions and the destruction of ATM machines (as happened during the George Floyd riots when Leftists damaged many parts of Philadelphia).

Philadelphia City Hall, because of the city’s reputation as a major Leftist arena, could become a nerve center in the new civil war, even under martial law.

The end of federal funding would hurl Philadelphia into dire poverty, and force many public schools to close. The mayor could ask citizens to accept the suffering as a sacrifice for the noble ideals of the Left, such as the right to reproductive freedom (abortion on demand, up to the ninth month).

Democrat mayors all over the country might usher in new taxation to make up for the loss of federal dollars: a heavy city tax on water ice, spring water, chocolate, and a special marathon tax for competitive runners, as well as a bicycle tax for obsessive cyclists. Additionally, a runner’s “scenic” tax will be imposed on joggers who insist on running in city parks.

The federal funding disaster would spiral outward and affect most areas of city life. Outdoor restaurants and cafes would close, as well as many theaters; those that remain open will be subject to a special tax if they produce plays that ignore Leftist values.

Finally, blue cities will enact legislation canonizing Dr. Anthony Fauci as a national hero. Criticism of the good doctor will not be tolerated, despite the latest facts pouring out of Washington about the man’s crooked nature.

Exposing Fauci though is an uphill fight, because as of this writing, millions of people know almost nothing about it.

As the writer Hans Mahncke put it, “We can debate precisely how large a role Fauci played in the creation of Covid, but half the country does not even know that Covid came from a lab. We are therefore several steps removed from the basic conditions required to have an intelligent discussion.”

But I’m jumping way ahead of myself, since this civil war is far from over.
