Mamdani proposes de facto ration cards for New Yorkers to buy his cheap government groceries

So New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has a solution to the obvious problems of his free government groceries going out the door to speculators and out-of-staters who can buy and can resell the discounted foods at a profit.

Q: How you gonna keep people from taking advantage of that deal basically, and is there going to be a limit on the number of items that someone can take that are discounted at that level from that essential basket? 

Mamdani: So, our RFP makes very clear that this is a program for New Yorkers to be able to put food on the table, not a program for people to be able to make a quick buck through reselling. I’m going to pass it over to our EDC head, Jeanny Pak, to add some additional details.

(Mayor steps aside / looks down.)

Jeanny Pak (Interim President, NYC Economic Development Corporation / EDC, at the podium): Yes, if you look at our RFP for the operator, we are looking to make sure that we target New Yorkers, whether it be [through] a sort of a library card-esque [system], and also, we manage who’s buying and that it’s focused on everyday New Yorkers. So, we are mindful of that, and we’re going to make sure that we have all the things in place to ensure that that does not happen.

Which is perfectly recognizable to Daniel Di Martino, whose family fled Venezuela several years ago. 

In other words, ration cards, to monitor how much and what people are consuming, if they can get the goods at all, given the corruption and mismanagement that is likely to follow. The minion speaking even speaks of monitoring who’s buying.

People will stand in line for hours waiting for food with their ‘library-esque cards in hand, instead of embracing a plethora of choices of food waiting for them to come to it in a free market society, as the Soviet-era Russians often would say.

This is how it all gets started.

Free and cheap stuff sounds good on paper, but the laws of supply and demand for goods at artificially low prices create more demand than the government can supply. Then the ration cards come, which always end up as a means of social control.

After that, the informants come, helping to enforce those food limits from profiteers, wreckers and hoarders, as the old Soviet commissars used to put it. 

In no time at all, you start to get that evil old woman spying on the indy film maker in East Germany, peering through the keyhole, as had been seen in The Lives of Others. The result is a low-trust society where no one trusts anyone, and being on the government take to ensure food rations is an attractive proposition, as was learned in the Stasi files after the Berlin Wall came down.

This is how it starts. 

After that, it’s a government choice as to who eats and who doesn’t.

Care to say ‘lost freedom’?

One can only hope that free markets and the federal government can derail this nasty plan that is bound to increase government power over the lives of innocent New Yorkers, many of whom didn’t vote for this guy, and human flight and bankruptcy shocks Mamdani into sense, but I wouldn’t count on it.

New York is in for some tough times if this candyman-childcatcher scheme really goes through, because we have seen this story before.
