If the allegations put forward by Tulsi Gabbard, former Director of National Intelligence, prove to be substantially true, Dr. Anthony Fauci’s legacy will be remembered as one of the greatest betrayals of the public trust in modern American history.

For four decades, Fauci occupied one of the most influential positions in the federal government. As Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), he controlled billions of taxpayer dollars, directed research priorities, advised presidents of both parties, and enjoyed a level of public credibility rarely afforded to unelected bureaucrats. Americans were encouraged to trust him — not because he was elected, but because he was presented as the embodiment of objective science.
That trust is precisely what makes the controversies surrounding his tenure so consequential. Fauci’s history in this position of power is one that should not be overlooked. That is why Senator Rand Paul, as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, issued a subpoena compelling Fauci to testify before Congress. Fauci had declined to appear voluntarily.
Fauci is no stranger to controversy. As director of NIAID (1984–2022), he oversaw the institute that funded much of the nation’s HIV/AIDS research. For two decades, beginning in 1985, NIAID conducted research involving the treatment of society’s most vulnerable children during the AIDS epidemic. Investigative journalist Liam Scheff alleged that HIV-positive foster children and orphans were enrolled in experimental drug trials without adequate informed consent or independent advocacy. Official reviews raised legitimate ethical concerns about research involving vulnerable children.
Critics alleged that the treatment children received was brutal and unethical, with staff and doctors prioritizing trial compliance over the children’s well-being. Scheff reported that some children experienced significant side effects, and those who resisted the drugs were held down and force-fed. It is also on record that persistent refusers underwent surgical insertion of gastric (stomach) tubes for direct drug delivery. One reason this policy faced little resistance is that the foster children had no parents protecting their interests.
But this wasn’t the only experimentation under Fauci that exploited a vulnerable population.
From 2016 to 2019 came what has come to be known simply as the “beagle experiments.” At that time, Fauci’s NIAID funded research that included exposing dogs to infected sand flies while their heads were restrained inside mesh enclosures to facilitate insect feeding. Laboratory procedures included surgical removal of portions of the dogs’ vocal cords to reduce barking in research facilities. While Fauci did not personally perform these experiments, as director of NIAID he approved the grants that allowed the research. As with the children, these procedures once again illustrated a disturbing willingness to subordinate ethical concerns to bureaucratic research objectives.
Yet, as disgusting as they may be, neither controversy approaches the impact of Fauci’s decisions that led to the mass devastation resulting from COVID-19.

Never forget. COVID-19 was not merely another infectious disease. It became one of the defining catastrophes of the twenty-first century. The virus uncounted numerous lives worldwide, sent tens of millions to hospitals, overwhelmed healthcare systems, and forever altered countless families. Yet the human toll did not end with the disease itself. Governments responded with unprecedented lockdowns that shuttered businesses, emptied schools, isolated the elderly, delayed medical care, and brought entire economies to a standstill.

In the United States alone, millions of jobs disappeared almost overnight. Tens of thousands of small businesses — many built through decades of sacrifice — closed their doors permanently. Children suffered profound educational setbacks. Mental health crises surged. Substance abuse increased. Government debt exploded into the trillions as politicians attempted to compensate for an economy they had deliberately frozen. The ripple effects continue today in the form of persistent inflation, disrupted supply chains, labor shortages, and a generation of students still struggling to recover academically.
COVID-19 inflicted immense suffering, and the governmental response imposed extraordinary economic and social costs. If the upcoming investigations reveal that critical information about the virus’s origins or associated research was knowingly concealed, history will judge that not merely as a scientific controversy but as a gross betrayal measured in lives, livelihoods, social welfare, and public trust.
If America’s highest-ranking public health official knowingly misled elected representatives about federally funded research, not only will one man’s reputation be detonated, but a foundational element of constitutional government will be shaken to the core.
Congress cannot perform oversight if witnesses are untruthful. Taxpayers cannot hold agencies accountable if critical information is withheld. Scientists cannot honestly debate competing theories if politically inconvenient evidence is suppressed. And citizens cannot make informed decisions if the experts entrusted with protecting them opt instead to merely protect themselves.
Millions of Americans accepted unprecedented restrictions on their lives because they believed public health officials were acting with complete honesty. With that confidence abused, future public health emergencies will become more difficult to manage. People who have been deceived once are rightfully reluctant to trust again.
It should be noted that the pardon granted to Fauci by Joe Biden’s autopen shields him only from federal charges prior to January 2025. It does not protect him if he were to commit perjury at the upcoming hearing.
This is why the congressional hearings matter.
In a constitutional republic, credibility is earned through transparency, preserved through honesty, and forfeited the moment public servants place institutional protection above public accountability. No office, no title, no credential, and no white laboratory coat places anyone above the duty to tell the truth.
Whether history ultimately remembers Anthony Fauci as the public servant from hell will depend upon the evidence to be examined. If the most serious allegations concerning COVID-19 prove true — if federally funded research not only contributed to the catastrophe but is responsible for its creation — it will stand as one of the greatest failures of government policy and public accountability in American history.
