As Ruy Teixeira pointed out, the Democrats lost in 2024 and then decided to double down on listening to the young lefties who got them in trouble in the first place. They looked at 2024 and concluded that VP Harris was just a bad messenger or something like that. Let’s check in with Ruy:

Democrats’ catastrophic 2024 defeat exposed a yawning gap between the cultural and policy priorities of a party dominated by liberal professionals and the priorities of the median working-class voter. The logical response was to close that gap and bring the party back toward the voters it was losing.
There was a brief moment right after the 2024 election when a real reckoning seemed possible. That didn’t last. #Resistance fever gripped the party, the usual suspects fought off any revision of party positions, and momentum shifted to the energized progressive left instead.
The trend has only accelerated. Zohran Mamdani’s 2025 New York City mayoral win kicked off a surge of Democratic Socialists of America primary victories that continued through the 2026 midterm primaries.
Most notably, Mamdani and the DSA backed three Democratic candidates for New York City House seats – Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez – and all three won, including Chevalier’s ouster of Adriano Espaillat, the sitting chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Given how deep-blue these districts are, all three are all but certain to win in November.
The wave kept building. Chris Rabb won the Democratic nomination for a Philadelphia House seat, Melat Kiros ousted a 30-year incumbent for a Denver seat, and Donavan McKinney knocked off a sitting Michigan congressman for a Detroit-area seat. All three districts are safe blue seats.
Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate nomination, and Janeese Lewis George won the Democratic nomination for DC mayor – all but guaranteeing she becomes the city’s first democratic socialist mayor.

Yes, let’s try it again and primary more establishment incumbents in the next round. The most vulnerable Democrat on Earth is one facing a primary from the left.
These lefties know how to win primaries or get out just enough of their friends to vote for whatever the slogan is.
Want affordable housing? They’ve got that one. We’ll just freeze the rent or tax the rich.
Food is too expensive? We’ll try public groceries or exactly the same idea that failed miserably in Havana and Caracas. (I remember my late Cuban mother standing in line at the public “bodega” to get our ration for the week. Before communism, “bodegas” were active businesses competing for your business. After the smart lefties took over, they were always short of everything.)
On other issues, they want to defund the police, eliminate ICE, do away with the U.S. Senate, and a few other things clearly outlined in their own manifesto. Yes, every lefty has a manifesto.
We thought that the Democrats would get the message after 2024. Unfortunately, it may take another beating at the polls for the party to get it.
