Sometimes I feel like a frog that’s getting boiled.  The temperature keeps going up slowly, so I’m not really provoked to jump out of the pot.

Just now, in the California gulag, a law was enacted to forbid the watering of “decorative” grasses, regardless of drought conditions.  But it’s okay.  We’ve become sort of used to it.

My sense of self-worth, however, resents being told what to do with my water.  Sometimes I think of sustaining other non-essential plants…and even taking a shower or washing dishes.  But the self-anointed geniuses have already enacted a statute that limits household daily water consumption to 55 gallons per resident for “internal” use, not including landscape irrigation.  Since nobody knows how many residents are at any particular address, let alone what water is used indoors versus in the garden, the same “rulers” put the burden of enforcement on the local water districts.  Thus far, such authorities have looked the other way.

All this has been done in order to compensate for avoiding the most obvious way of dealing with this issue: increasing reservoir storage capacity and building coastal desalination plants next to nuclear power generating facilities, as has been done near Carlsbad.

Why are we being governed by such stupid jerks?  Answer: because we allow it.

What seems to be all too obvious is that people go into politics not to faithfully serve their neighbors, but to lord it over them, since they think they know better how we should live our lives than we do.  This opinion of mine was seriously reinforced by a chance encounter I had with a candidate for my county’s superintendent of schools.  I took this opportunity to advocate for the abolition of government-run schools in favor of voucher-subsidized competitive schools vying for parents’ choice.  Her dogmatic response was that most parents aren’t competent to choose a school for their children.  I let it slide, while knowing that nameless, faceless bureaucrats have much less skin in the game than do mostly doting mothers and fathers.  She still won the election.

Further tyrannies abound.  California has outlawed the buying and selling of gas-powered garden tools, such as lawnmowers, blowers, and hedge-trimmers.  It’s still legal, however, to use them, while the equipment dealers of western Nevada are cleaning up big time.  Some municipalities have also banned the use of blowers because of the noise…but still allow motorcycles.  Just recently, California banned “non-compostable” plastic bags, which used to be commonly available in grocery stores for shoppers to put their green beans, mushrooms, etc. into prior to checkout.  The acceptable bags now being offered are beyond fragile, making it problematic for them to make it all the way home without rupturing.  Fortunately, rolls of real food storage bags are still available from Amazon for practically nothing.

This brings us to the diffuse, lower-level tyranny being espoused by the ostensible advocates of tolerance, diversity, and inclusion.  They really support tolerance only for those who agree with them and a diversity that is entirely imaginary.

I am constantly reminded of this anecdotally when I stroll through my Bay Area neighborhood wearing my MAGA ball cap.  I am constantly waved at, fist-bumped, and downright cheered, though I’ve never seen a Trump or MAGA lawn sign or bumper sticker.  Intimidation works as far as public display, but not always with personal opinion.  Tires can be slashed and windows broken…anonymously.  This may also account for the tendency of Democrats to seem to underperform their opinion polling once the election actually happens.  You know, we’re kind of used to keeping our opinions to ourselves when talking to strangers.
