Voters are already casting ballots by mail or in-person for the midterms. Sheer motivation will decide which party controls Congress, but not on the basis of grocery bills or gas prices.

What shall determine this election cycle? Whether enough of one side shows up to stop the other from assuming control over Capitol Hill and key statehouses.
The Democrats have made clear that regaining even one congressional chamber would spark a mission to restart the open-border machine, culminating in mass amnesty. The blue objective is ruinous for America, and the fair-minded people who grasp reality should vote their interests without hesitation.
A Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) analysis lays out the permanent fiscal wound of blue immigration policy. The lifetime net cost of each illegal alien already present is estimated at $166,716. Scaled across the existing population of illegals, the aggregate burden sits between $1.4 trillion and $1.9 trillion. Granting amnesty would convert temporary, restricted welfare claims into full and permanent eligibility for major federal programs.
Annual new costs for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as “food stamps,” would rise by $3.6 billion to $4.7 billion. Housing assistance under the Department of Housing and Urban Development would add $2.3 billion to $3 billion each year. Medicaid spending would jump by $30 billion to $40 billion annually. Combined, those three programs would add $36 billion to $47 billion in new federal spending every year, or $361 billion to $475 billion over a decade.
Those figures cover only the narrowest slice of leftist immigration policy.
The same CEA analysis projects that the full suite of open-border and amnesty policies, if enacted, would impose roughly $49 trillion in costs over ten years; more than $350,000 for every American household. That is not an accounting error. It is the direct transfer of resources from working citizens to people who entered or remained illegally, followed by their newly legalized dependents and the bureaucratic apparatus required to service them.
States and localities already strained by shelter costs, schooling requirements, and emergency medical care would face even larger unfunded mandates once federal eligibility expands. The result is higher taxes, soaring deficits, or both, layered on top of the existing debt crisis that threatens Uncle Sam’s long-term solvency.
The Republican alternative is already visible.
Under the Donald J. Trump administration, southwest border apprehensions in August stood 94% below the monthly average of the prior four years. Customs and Border Protection has recorded 16 consecutive months. with zero illegal aliens released into the interior. More than three million illegals have left the country since Trump retook office. Drug seizures are up 73% compared with the same period under Biden-Harris. Overdose deaths have declined as trafficking networks lose ground.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested more than 10,000 gang members and over 2,100 known or suspected terrorists. Temporary Protected Status designations, abused as de facto amnesty, have been returned to their statutory limits. Immigrant visa processing has been paused for 75 countries whose nationals draw welfare at high rates.
These are measurable outcomes of immigration law enforcement, not mere rhetoric. None of that progress would be backed by a Democrat majority in either the U.S. House or Senate.
Blue leaders have repeatedly pledged to end large-scale removals, restore catch-and-release practices, and pass legislation that legalizes millions. The cost estimates above cover only the first wave of amnesty eligibility. Once the legalization of illegal aliens creates new “citizen” voters and new immigration claims, the political incentive to expand benefits further becomes self-reinforcing.
Public resources shift from citizens who pay net taxes to legalized illegals, and the newer entrants they sponsor, who receive net transfers. Labor markets in lower-skill sectors face renewed downward pressure. Schools and hospitals absorb larger caseloads without corresponding revenue. Crime statistics that improved under Trump-era enforcement reverse.
The cumulative effect is not gradual drift but a step-function change in the country’s demographic, fiscal, and political composition. This is exactly the transformation which immigration control advocates have warned against for decades. It would usher in a permanent blue majority, so there is no question why Democrats lust after it.

More than anything else, that is why these midterms cannot be boiled down to some national economic snapshot.
In a national poll I collaborated on with the Democracy Institute of 910 self-identified Republican likely voters, conducted during late May, 79% said Trump’s performance on non-economic issues outweighs his economic record. 88% said those non-economic actions still make him worthy of support.
86% indicated their midterm vote will rest primarily on non-economic performance, even if the economy does not surge. 94% said they are mainly supporting Trump rather than a particular congressional candidate.
Immigration reduction, border control, and the refusal of amnesty sit at the center of that non-economic motivation. Economic dissatisfaction rages among the broader public. Yet, it does not override these convictions among Republican voters who reliably appear in non-presidential years.
I have argued vociferously that the economy will not determine how November’s midterms play out. In 2024, I developed the Five-Point Forecast. It correctly called the presidential outcome, nationally and in every swing state, because household economics still reached enough movable voters. Midterms are a different animal. Turnout among voting-age citizens has averaged roughly 15 points lower than presidential turnout since 1980.
The remaining voters are older, more ideological, and much less willing to cross the aisle over an inflation report. They vote because they already pledge allegiance to their side. Recent midterms confirm it.
In 2018, strong employment, robust economic growth, and a major tax cut still produced large House losses for Trump’s GOP. In 2022, 40-year-high inflation and elevated energy costs failed to deliver the Republican wave which many expected against Biden-Harris. Issue polarization has widened sharply since 2008. The result is two blocs that already know which side they occupy. Midterm contests are reduced to which bloc generates higher turnout in the districts and states that decide partisan control.
Early voting is already underway in multiple states, including those that will determine the House and Senate. The window for persuasion among the undecided is minuscule because the swinging share of the midterm electorate is itself negligible. What remains is partisan base mobilization.
Republican-leaning voters who treat this election as inconsequential, who use personal inconvenience as a reason to sit it out, or who assume bad memories of Biden-Harris will restrain the blue opposition are badly mistaken. The Democrats have made their immigration agenda clear. That agenda means concrete multi-trillion-dollar burdens and third-world demographic change.
Immigration control gains achieved over the past two years are reversible by statute and by congressional budgetary appropriation. Once reversed, the fiscal and social consequences compound for years beyond any single Congress.
In this polarized political environment, base motivation decides the outcome of an entire election cycle. Therefore, any hesitation or abstention on one side functions as a contribution to the other. The prospects of Democrat ruination are readily apparent. The early ballots, blue and red, are already being cast. The question is whether enough GOP voters treat the stakes as real.
Democrats sure do. The time is now for Republicans to follow suit.
