I predict that stroppy Canadians will boo our national anthem at upcoming hockey games. Let’s nip this in the bud. Before overwrought Canadian fans dare to disrespect our national anthem, they ought to remember on which side their bread is buttered.
There are 32 teams in the National Hockey League: 25 U.S., seven Canada. Hockey is growing faster in the U.S. Furthermore, the vast majority of day-to-day league operations, gate receipts, and local arena revenues are generated in the United States.
Currently, NHL teams sanction fans for chants, gestures, political antics, and other disruptive behaviors. This is not a sport for girly-men, so we don’t want to tamp down too much on the passion. However, drowning out a nation’s sacred national anthem is provocation almost tantamount to a declaration of mob war. I suggest the NHL proactively prohibit the Canadian fans in this regard.

They really shouldn’t be so uppity, but they do have a lot of Frenchies up there, so it’s almost understandable. Indeed, the peevish little twit Carney is exclaiming exaggerated support for French language and culture. No wonder President Trump is taking a metaphorical stick to him. Give him another.

Discretion being the better part of valor, the U.S.-dominated NHL needs to expand their list of sanctions to specifically cover disrespecting our national anthem. During the inspirational “Star-Spangled Banner,” the Canadians really ought to shut the puck up. Otherwise, there’s always the prospect of a Canadian Bacon-type incursion to bring Governor Carney to heel.
