The Detroit public school system is almost entirely a non-white student body; US News puts the portion of white students at 2.4%, blacks at 80.8%, Hispanics at 14.5%, and the rest a mix. Naturally, based on that demographic make-up alone, you know the dysfunction is rampant. So, it should come as no surprise that Detroit public schools have a severe truancy problem—last year, a Michigan outlet reported that more than half of the public school kids “regularly miss class,” noting that “chronic absenteeism” is a persistent problem.

So the Democrats decided to throw more money at the problem, and implemented a handout where they’d start paying students to attend school—go to all your classes for just two consecutive weeks (ten school days total), and you’d get a $200 gift card. (Nearly 5,000 students in Detroit alone were given this sum over the 2024–2025 school year, totaling $1,000,000.)
Apparently, that program is now being expanded—like all government programs. According to a report from a local Fox News outlet, the handout will be open to middle schoolers as well, and the price for high schoolers is increasing:
Middle school students who get perfect attendance for a week, will get a $50 gift card up to $500 if they attend every class that week on time.
High school students will earn a $100 gift card for their perfect attendance for an entire week with a chance to make up to $1000.
Now, US News also tells us that the school district is making more than $27k in revenue for each student, and spending a little over $21k per student (that’s a $6,000 profit per kid that they then spend on who knows what). To put that number into context, I pay a little under $8,000 a year for my son Jack to attend a very good private Christian school, where the demographics are infinitely more desirable, and the education is fantastic. I wouldn’t want a Detroit public school kid anywhere near my son’s classroom, but I’m simply pointing out that an education, when you get government out of it, can be done for a fraction of what we’re being forced to fund.
What a disgusting exploitation of the taxpayers. First, we’re paying almost thirty-thousand dollars a year per deadbeat kid to be enrolled, and now we’re essentially handing them cash to simply get the “education” we’re already paying for. It doesn’t take a genius to realize what kind of adults these “students” will become. Not doctors and lawyers—or electricians or factory workers or anything productive—I can tell you that.
Here’s an actual solution, at least to the truancy problem: Parents whose kids don’t get to school? Well they don’t get their Section 8 housing dollars, they don’t get their food stamps and WIC, they don’t get their “free” healthcare, and they don’t get all their other welfare handouts, unless they actually get their kids to school on time like normal and functional parents do.
Because you know they’re all being subsidized—these people are apparently incapable of behaving like first-worlders when we don’t compel higher standards—and you know that’s the only thing that motivates demographics like those in the inner city of Detroit.
