Progressive Elie Mystal, he of the white afro, and ticked off about several recent rulings, suggested that SCOTUS could do without their security and “learn karate.” He put forth Amy Coney Barrett specifically to be a karate student. It’s notable that this paragon of progressive values didn’t choose one of the elderly men, but instead the lithe, youthful Ms. Barrett, who would, indeed, be extremely vulnerable should he get his wish.

Remarkably, this selective misogynist is paid to think in public, notably as the “Justice Correspondent and Columnist” for The Nation magazine, now a progressive sewer, but once a righteous publication founded by abolitionists back in 1865. Mystal is such a mess of jumbled thinking, I doubt he’s even aware that those abolitionists were Republicans. Or if he is, he’s in the “the parties switched sides” camp, which is patently absurd but a very popular belief among Democrats.
His voice matters because while he is clownish to us, he speaks from a position of progressive authority to other progressives: he is a Board Member of a progressive group that focuses on federal court reform, Demand Justice, and he had those thoughts on SCOTUS security on another progressive group’s video cast, that of Indivisible.
And what is Indivisible?
They’re the group that lined the streets in the little Maine town where Chief Justice John Roberts has a summer home, and worse, far worse, organized more protestors in kayaks to float close to the shore of his home.
It’s a very short paddle from kayaks in one’s backyard to direct confrontation. Once these unhinged lefties know where you live, you should consider yourself in imminent danger. It’s appalling that the Chief should have to worry about his personal safety anywhere, but certainly not in some quiet coastal town in Maine.
To be clear, I am no fan of Chief Justice Roberts. I am, however, a fan of civil society, and this ain’t it.
This is the same group that terrorized another leader I am no fan of, Senator Susan Collins, at her home back in 2018.

Again, there is a minimum level of civility we should all expect, and having hoards of screaming people clanging pots and pans, shouting, and otherwise mobbing up and disturbing the peace outside your home, isn’t it.
In fact, there are specific laws against protesting the judiciary for the purposes of influencing adjudication (or any other purpose). Senator Collins does not enjoy that protection, being, as she is, an elected lawmaker, but there really ought to be a law against protesting people at their homes. In front of the Court? Sure. Outside a legislator’s office? Okay (Within reason!). But at home? No. Big no. At the very least, people’s spouses, children, and elderly relatives should not be afraid for their personal safety when they are with their loved ones. Their neighbors should not be so disturbed either. The entire scene is third world, and I’d like to think we’re better than that.
We can’t do much about Elie Mystal. You’re allowed to be stupid in public. But surely we can enhance the already existing law to include a mandatory custodial sentence if you’re caught simply loitering or, worse, disturbing the peace outside a judge/Justice’s private property. Surely, we can draft a law to protect our legislators at their homes too.
A minimum of one year sounds good. It ought to be enough to simply be caught standing there. It’s one thing to be jogging past or walking your dog, but to be a private citizen (as opposed to a contractor or delivery man) in front of the home for more than a minute ought to be the minimum threshold so that there are no legal shenanigans or pleadings down. One minute = one year. Sounds good to me.
It’s time. The left has lost control, and they are dangerous.
