I don’t care what you are “supposed” to do. On this day, we need to fly the American flag higher, larger, and more magnificently than any other day of the year. This is not a time for mourning but for celebration and appreciation.
I agree with General George Patton — who knew more than a little about fighting and dying:
“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.”

Another general who also knew fighting and dying, Douglas MacArthur, noted:
“They died hard, those savage men — like wounded wolves at bay. They were filthy, and they were lousy, and they stunk. And I loved them.”
Love them too. Love them with all your heart. Thank God that such men and women lived. Celebrate their magnificence. But please don’t mourn, and please keep those flags flying high to let them know we will never forget.
