It seems that California has commenced on yet another end run around the Constitution with AB-2624 –the “Stop Nick Shirley” act, just signed by the Werewolf of Sacramento (“his hair was perfect”).

This act is directly aimed at Shirley for his work in exposing fraud involving immigration activists, health care, and education in both Minnesota and California. Going from office to clinic to “learing center,” Shirley exposed dozens of operations that were basically fronts for funneling millions – at times tens of millions – from government programs into the pockets of various con artists, many of them illegal immigrants. The total amount uncovered thus far amounts to nearly $230 billion.
The DoJ has commenced investigations into the Minnesota allegations, largely involving Somalians (and some even associated with Ilhan Omar), with some early success. But as for California…
Never a state to allow anything to get in the way of the exploitation of taxpayers, California has taken a different tack. Instead of busting the fraudsters, the Cali state government targeted the man who was attempting to expose them. The mental gymnastics necessary to justify this presented no challenge: California Democrats simply recast the fraudsters as victims.
“This is a very scary time. Right now, our immigrant service providers are living in fear, because of the work that they do.” So asserted Mia Bonta, Democrat assemblyman and the author of AB-2624 (She’s also the wife of Cali AG Rob Bonta, but that‘s just a coincidence. Seriously. There’s nothing to it. Don’t even look at it.)
The bill is simplicity itself, merely outlawing the publication of the addresses of “immigrant service providers.” (Feel free to pause for a moment to wrap your mind around that truly Californian phrase.) But consider how open-ended it actually is. What, exactly, is an “Immigration service provider”? That’s not at all clear, though I suspect that it’s anybody who has anything at all to do with immigration. (Many of the conmen taken down by Nick Shirley were not, in fact, directly involved in immigration.) What does “publication” mean? Same thing – it means whatever they’re pointing at when they say the word. This bill pretty much allows anybody to be arrested for anything involving immigration. Recall the FACE Act (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances) passed using the exact same class of rhetoric (one article claimed that it was necessary to stop activists from “bothering pregnant women”) but evolved into something that justified arrests of anybody praying within several blocks of a clinic.

There used to be a thing called the “Bill of Attainder,” a legislative act aimed at a single individual that was widely used in monarchies to punish critics of the crown. These are expressly banned in the Constitution (In Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3). Yet here we are. This is yet another example of the left, unable to win a political argument, going all out on sleaze tactics as an alternative.
Why are they so desperate to stop Shirley, you ask? I’m sure I don’t know, but as a wild guess, I would imagine that it’s because the Dems are getting a nice cut of the proceeds, as with Minnesota, USAID, and any other scam you’d care to name.
Republican state rep Carl Demaio has called for the DoJ to step in, which is fine, but that will take time – it’s not as if the DoJ has nothing else on its hands.
So my suggestion is that Nick Shirley double down. Continue doing what he’s doing – knocking on doors, questioning shifty “immigration service providers,” publicizing the results, and challenging California to do something about it. I see them backing down. You really think Gavin is going to cosplay as the West Coast Big Brother while scheming for the presidential nod in 28?
