Musical genius Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys created a catchy, time-tested tune called “California Girls.” Having lived there for multiple years back when beauty was not only in the eye of the beholder, but also reflected some degree of universal objectivity, I appreciate the old sentiment.

The times are changing. Nowadays, the misguided Gen Z chicks get a kick out of rejecting any tradition, even pleasing standards of classical beauty.

Confusedly, they are still spending on so-called “beauty” products. Take one example: the company E.L.F. Beauty. Their stock has been buoyant. They recently raised their sales outlook, and several Wall Street firms are raising estimates and price targets. A major customer constituency is Gen Zers, who view beauty products as essential.

They are natural and authentic, not cosmetic. In addition to being quite lovely inside and out, they are less rebellious against the patriarchy and less likely to back-chat just for the sake of it (though confident when needed).

To borrow a couple of lyrics from the late, great Brian Wilson, the Passport Bros have discovered that Thai girls “really make you feel alright,” and even Columbia girls “keep their boyfriends warm at night.” But given their druthers, I bet most wish they “all could be Filipina girls.”
