Within a few months, except for what I assume will be a lucrative MS-NOW gig, we will all have forgotten Graham Platner. He won’t even be an endnote to a footnote in future history books, including those written for Maine. Nevertheless, his message announcing his formal withdrawal from the Maine Senatorial campaign is worth studying because it is a textbook example of Marxism in America, and embodies the new Democrat party.

For months, Democrats pointedly ignored the Nazi tattoo, the accusations of sexually aggressive behavior, the fact that he cheated on his wife, the weird things he said about being glad to see American soldiers shot, his sexual response to Porta-Potties, and his longing to rape people (presumably men) who invaded his home.
These details were irrelevant because Platner was a construct. Despite his affluent upbringing, they recast him as a patriotic (former military) working man (oyster farmer) who embraced the new Democrat message with messianic fervor: America is evil, white men (other than Platner) are evil, the wrong kind of millionaires and billionaires (those who aren’t leftists) are evil, borders are evil, and, of course, Israel needs to be destroyed.
Intermission: There’s a trope in both crime novels and “deep” novels about the guy who joins the military not for the ordinary reasons—patriotism, needing a job, looking for adventure, etc.—but because he’s a sadist who sees in the military an opportunity to use his sociopathic impulses with impunity. I’m not saying, of course, that Platner is that guy. I’m just noting here this common plot device, especially in novels written since 9/11 about the military, which some authors view as the last refuge of stupid, lazy people (a concept the preppy leftist Lurch, John Kerry, supports).
Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Actually, “regularly programmed” perfectly describes Platner, who mouthed Marxist “platner-tudes” throughout his campaign with monotonous regularity.
Naturally, the mainstream media slavishly loved Platner, so he got off to a good, jackrabbit start in the polls. But as the elections started becoming a real thing, and not just a hypothetical, and as the stories about Platner’s words and deeds started piling up, people had doubts. He was dropping in the polls, so Democrats decided that it was time to Biden him—that is, because he wouldn’t leave voluntarily, they set him up for a fall that would force his withdrawal.
In this case, the fall was an accusation of sexual assault from a “reputable” source (a Democrat voter, not a Republican one). The party had its leverage, and Platner announced he was “suspending” his campaign.
There was a lot of “will he or won’t he officially withdraw” speculation after that. My take was always “he will.” With pressure at one end and carrots at the other (Money? A book deal? Kingmaker status? Who really knows?), he was going to bow out and let the backroom deal-makers override the will of the Maine Democrat primary voters.

But Platner had one bit of pride left, one little bit of Marine fighting spirit. He wasn’t going to go out meekly. He was going to go out in full-blown Marxist mode, anti-American and antisemitic to the bitter end:

I write to formally withdraw my candidacy for United States Senate.
On June 9th, 156,084 Mainers voted for a new kind of politics. One that is representative of people down here in the real world – not billionaires, oligarchs, or the political establishment. Mainers voted for Medicare for All; to ban billionaires from buying elections; and for an end to taxpayer- funded genocide and forever wars. They voted for time and dignity; for strong unions and jobs they can raise families on; for the hope of buying a home; for the chance to retire with grace.
People are desperate for change. For this broken system to be righted. For the American experiment to be furthered. Over the past eleven months, thousands and thousands of Mainers poured their hearts, time, and talent into a movement to deliver that vision. I will be forever grateful to them. And in submitting this letter today, I seek to further the movement we have built together and the future we believe in.
My name may have been on the ballot, but that ballot line belongs to the people of Maine. As such, please consider this notice as my official withdrawal from consideration for this office.
F*ck ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts.
Solidarity forever
In the paragraph immediately after his withdrawal announcement, Platner restates the DSA platform that Maine Democrats desire: socialized medicine, the end of free speech for billionaires with whom he disagrees (not you, Neville Singham, Reed Hoffman, or anyone named Soros), an end to wars that defend America against nuclear-armed genocidal regimes that have “Death to America” as part of their official platform, and continued government control over people’s work, housing, etc.
But it’s in the last two paragraphs that the venom really explodes. Properly understood, those three phrases—”F*ck ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts”—translate this way: “Destroy the American government and nation, kill all Jews, and I really love soccer.”
What a piece of human detritus. I’d say “good riddance to bad rubbish” if Platner were the only one. But he’s just the man of the minute. The whole DSA…they’re all like this: spoiled, affluent, and filled with hate. And they’re now the Democrat party base.
