As I wrote in a prior article, the concept of a grid with distributed energy resources (DERs) has been promulgated by parties pushing for renewables and datacenters. They claim that a network model more approaching what we currently have with the Internet would be an improvement over our current power grid architecture. They envision a shared network for power generation, transmission, and distribution, built through the combined investments of millions of participants. Over time, this model would have the potential to reshape the technical and financial foundation of the energy system.<\/p>

However, they seem to gloss over some important distinctions between the power grid and the Internet. The obvious one is that the Internet is a network for informational flow, while the grid is concerned with power flows. These are very different things and should not be confused as being the same.<\/p>\n

Secondly, having power flow in from a multitude of diverse sources can prove problematic, as demonstrated in Spain\u2019s blackout last year. If the sources possess the capacity to deliver firm power as with thermal generators, it might be acceptable. However, if these sources do not possess the spinning inertia needed to ride out network perturbations, then they are a liability to the grid rather than an asset. The electric power grid is a resilient machine in which grid source impedance is low compared with the load impedance. That lets the grid behave like a stiff voltage source: voltage stays nearly constant, even when loads change. If sources and loads adhere to this rule, all will be fine. If they deviate, then you have the Spanish disaster mentioned above.<\/p>\n

Twenty years ago, I was in the thick of a debate at Comcast over the merits of one network architecture versus another for delivering video. We discussed many of the same tradeoffs between centralized and distributed architecture that are now pondered within the power industry. However, I sense that the current debate on optimal grid architecture is less than honest and may be a cover by the Left to further its political agenda of eradicating fossil fuels, a trojan horse of sorts.\u00a0<\/p>

The beauty of the current arrangement for receiving our electricity is that it\u2019s simple and it works. We plug into the grid when we desire and receive a bill for usage at the end of the month. Anyone who is out of reach of an electricity, gas, internet, water or sewer utility, can attest to the hassle of going it alone.<\/p>\n

Many of the new community-based, cooperative DER schemes incur too much involvement from a customer perspective, similar in nature to what is expected of EV owners. It is not at all apparent how the added complexity of such systems improves delivery. They are made out to be reliable, cheaper, hassle-free, and tech savvy, which they are not. With the Left currently lying about the cost and reliability of renewables, batteries, EVs and heat pumps, how are they to be trusted when proposing new schemes with distributed energy resources (DERs)? The simple answer is that they are not to be trusted on any front.<\/p>
