The bold font has been added.<\/p>\n<p>Readers can see many translations at biblegateway.com.<\/p>\n<p>Readers can see for themselves that God did not ask for Mary&#8217;s consent or permission.<\/p>\n<p>Luke writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In the sixth month of Elizabeth\u2019s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin\u2019s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, \u201cGreetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob\u2019s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow will this be,\u201d Mary asked the angel, \u201csince I am a virgin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The angel answered, \u201cThe Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. (Luke 1:26-38)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I put an important clause in bold because professional grammarians of ancient Greek sometimes see a command or imperative in the future tense (imperatival future). It is clear that the messenger Gabriel was issuing a command to Mary, and she surrendered to it.
