It is a legacy of courage reflected in the deadliest war humanity has known and passed down through 250 years of this nation\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the deeper meaning of D-Day risks slipping away from too many Americans, especially the young.<\/p>\n<p>This was never only about freeing Europe. Adolf Hitler had long seen the United States as a future enemy standing in the way of worldwide German domination. From the late 1920s onward, he planned for eventual war with America, viewing its population, land, and factories as obstacles to worldwide Nazi hegemony.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered construction of a powerful blue-water navy, long-range bombers designed to reach New York, and bases across the Atlantic. When Japan struck Pearl Harbor, Hitler eagerly declared war on the U.S., seeing it as the logical step in his global conquest for the so-called \u201cAryan\u201d race and its national socialist ideology. Victory in Europe and against the Soviets would have positioned Germany to challenge and dominate the Western Hemisphere next.<\/p>\n<p>D-Day helped slam the door on that nightmare before it reached American shores.<\/p>\n<p>My own late maternal grandfather lived this history in his bones. He stormed Utah Beach as an American GI and lost part of his leg in the fighting. Their example should inspire every American today.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, disturbing ignorance clouds the picture, especially among Millennials and Gen Z.<\/p>\n<p>A sweeping 50-state survey found that 63 percent of young adults, ages 18 to 39, did not know six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. Nearly half could not name a single one of the more than 40,000 Nazi concentration camps or ghettos. Many placed the Holocaust in the wrong war entirely. Eleven percent actually believed Jews caused it themselves, and roughly half had run into Holocaust denial online.<\/p>\n<p>While most support teaching World War II history in schools, the gaps remain wide, fed by weak education, vanishing eyewitnesses, and grotesque digital distortions.<\/p>\n<p>This forgetfulness is not harmless.<\/p>\n<p>When Americans lose touch with their own recent past, when they fail to grasp how close tyranny came to our own doorstep, the country weakens from within. D-Day showed what happens when righteous people unite against darkness, but it also warned that evil does not stay contained unless confronted with strength.<\/p>\n<p>The Greatest Generation understood this. They paid in blood so later generations would not have to. Honoring them means more than ceremonies. It demands remembering the stakes, rejecting weakness, and standing ready to defend what they secured.<\/p>\n<p>The men who hit those Normandy beaches did not fight for vague ideals. They fought for America, for their families, and for a future where tyranny could not reach our shores. Their valor remains the truest measure of what this nation is made of.
