Wesley Hunt, a Black Republican from Texas, laid out the distinction during a House Judiciary Committee hearing last week: \u201cJim Crow was a time when Black Americans could not sit in classrooms with white Americans.\u00a0\u00a0It was colored-only water fountains; it was beatings in the streets; it was lynchings.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0His father had to enter a New Orleans restaurant through the back door because of the color of his skin.\u00a0\u00a0Comparing that to showing a photo ID at the polls is not just historically wrong \u2014 it\u2019s an insult to everyone who endured the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>A Pew Research Center survey from August 2025 found that 83 percent of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote \u2014 including 71 percent of Democrats, 76 percent of black respondents, and 82 percent of Hispanic respondents.\u00a0\u00a0CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper cited those numbers to Schumer on air.\u00a0\u00a0Schumer kept going.\u00a0\u00a0Even Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) broke ranks: \u201cI would never refer to the SAVE Act as, like, Jim Crow 2.0 or some kind of mass conspiracy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0When your party\u2019s most prominent dissenter won\u2019t echo your line, the line has collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble with reflexive alarm-pulling is that credibility is a finite asset.\u00a0\u00a0The villagers in Aesop\u2019s fable didn\u2019t become cynics overnight.\u00a0\u00a0They just got tired of being fooled.\u00a0\u00a0Repetition killed the warning.\u00a0\u00a0That same dynamic plays out every time a serious civil-rights framework gets borrowed to describe a modest administrative requirement.\u00a0\u00a0Once the public senses the alarm is rung for effect \u2014 not because a real fire exists \u2014 trust starts to evaporate.\u00a0\u00a0And when trust goes, so does the capacity to mobilize people around anything that actually matters.<\/p>\n<p>That skepticism matters because policies still have consequences, and real people are paying for them.\u00a0\u00a0California has lost more than $102 billion in income to outmigration from 2020 to 2022, according to IRS data cited by the state\u2019s own Legislative Analyst\u2019s Office.\u00a0\u00a0The same LAO confirmed that outmigration is a drag on long-term revenue growth, one that could push personal income tax growth below its historical average if the trend holds.\u00a0\u00a0I arrived in California in 1990 when the mood was upbeat and the economy was expanding.\u00a0\u00a0Thirty-five years later, I\u2019ve watched productive people and their capital head for Texas, Florida, and Tennessee, taking their real estate listings and their payroll taxes with them.<\/p>\n<p>The LAO\u2019s April 2026 update confirmed that pandemic-era outmigration has eased somewhat but remains elevated by historical standards.\u00a0\u00a0The state\u2019s political leadership responded to all of this with more press releases about fairness.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s the fiscal equivalent of stepping on a rake and announcing your commitment to community resilience.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the hidden cost of single-party dominance.\u00a0\u00a0When one party runs the table, there\u2019s no real check on spending, no penalty for ideological overreach, and no one forcing a serious conversation about tradeoffs.\u00a0\u00a0Housing gets worse.\u00a0\u00a0Energy gets pricier.\u00a0\u00a0And the people who built careers and families there look at the math and leave.\u00a0\u00a0Thomas Sowell captured the underlying mechanism decades ago: \u201cIt is hard to imagine a more stupid or more dangerous way of making decisions than by putting those decisions in the hands of people who pay no price for being wrong.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0California has become the proof.<\/p>\n<p>In Minnesota, the Feeding Our Future scandal exposed more than $240 million stolen from a federal child nutrition program.\u00a0\u00a0Ringleader Aimee Bock was sentenced last week to 41.5 years in prison.\u00a0\u00a0That didn\u2019t happen because the paperwork was racist. Democrats advance<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a broader economic point that Democrats prefer not to discuss: Regulation isn\u2019t free.\u00a0\u00a0Research from the Mercatus Center found that heavier regulation in Minnesota is associated with higher consumer prices, fewer small business startups, fewer jobs, and greater poverty.\u00a0\u00a0Similar regressive effects were documented in Pennsylvania \u2014 higher prices, fewer businesses.\u00a0\u00a0The burden lands hardest on low-income families, who spend a larger share of their income on regulated goods and services.\u00a0\u00a0So much for the idea that more government automatically means more compassion.\u00a0\u00a0Milton Friedman spent a career explaining this.\u00a0\u00a0The data keep proving him right.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the Jim Crow comparison becomes not just historically wrong, but economically self-defeating.\u00a0\u00a0If every effort to verify eligibility, reduce fraud, or enforce standards gets denounced as racist, government gets weaker at the one thing it\u2019s actually supposed to do.\u00a0\u00a0And weak government is expensive.\u00a0\u00a0It invites waste.\u00a0\u00a0It invites the quiet assumption that no one is really watching.\u00a0\u00a0The result is higher taxes for people who play by the rules and more room for the people who don\u2019t.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s a system that punishes honesty.<\/p>\n<p>Markets punish governments that keep promising discipline while producing deficits.\u00a0\u00a0The same logic applies here.\u00a0\u00a0Cry Jim Crow too often, and the public starts hearing static.\u00a0\u00a0Then when a real injustice appears, the language has already been spent.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s nothing left to cash in.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a better standard, and it\u2019s not complicated.\u00a0\u00a0Keep civil rights language for actual civil rights violations.\u00a0\u00a0If a law denies people the vote because of race, call it what it is: illegal and immoral.\u00a0\u00a0But if a law asks voters to verify identity \u2014 or if a state asks program recipients to prove they qualify for benefits \u2014 that\u2019s governance.\u00a0\u00a0There\u2019s a meaningful difference between discrimination and administration, and the country would be better off if more of its political leadership remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>The fix doesn\u2019t require a constitutional convention.\u00a0\u00a0Require stronger fraud controls with independent audits and real consequences.\u00a0\u00a0Restore competitive elections in states that have become one-party laboratories of expensive mistakes.\u00a0\u00a0And stop handing political activists a historical sledgehammer every time a policy fight breaks out.\u00a0\u00a0America can honor its civil rights legacy without turning it into a gimmick.\u00a0\u00a0It can insist on basic accountability without apologizing for doing so.\u00a0\u00a0The public still knows the difference.<\/p>\n<p>The only question is
