On May 21, 2026, the Democratic National Committee released its long-awaited \u2014 and long-suppressed \u2014 192-page autopsy of Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential defeat.\u00a0\u00a0The document was written by Democrat strategist Paul Rivera at the request of DNC chair Ken Martin.\u00a0\u00a0When Martin finally released it, he attached an extraordinary disclaimer:\u00a0\u201cI am not proud of this product; it does not meet my standards, and it won\u2019t meet your standards. I don\u2019t endorse what\u2019s in this report, or what\u2019s left out of it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0That passage tells you nearly everything you need to know about the document\u2019s credibility.<\/p>

The report itself is\u00a0riddled with factual errors, missing its executive summary and conclusion entirely, and annotated throughout with DNC disclaimers such as \u201cclaim contradicts public reporting\u201d and \u201canalysis not supported by publicly available data.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0It was released only because CNN had already obtained it and was preparing to publish it.\u00a0\u00a0The DNC, true to form, managed to achieve the worst of all worlds: It suppressed the report long enough to invite suspicion, then released a document so incomplete that it invited ridicule.<\/p>\n

What the autopsy says is secondary to what it omits. And what it omits is the real story of why Harris lost.<\/p>\n

The Strategic Failure<\/h1>\n

The report concludes that Harris failed to separate herself from Biden, didn\u2019t make an \u201caffirmative case\u201d for herself, and was hurt by a Trump ad about transgender inmates.\u00a0\u00a0These are real but peripheral.\u00a0\u00a0They describe symptoms, not causes.<\/p>\n

The cause was simpler and more damning: Harris ran a campaign that devoted the overwhelming majority of its energy to attacking Donald Trump and almost none to offering a concrete economic agenda for middle-class families.<\/p>\n

From 2016 through 2024, attacking Trump became a predictable reflex.\u00a0\u00a0Trump-supporters had hardened their views across eight years of investigations, impeachments, and legal challenges.\u00a0\u00a0None of that moved them.\u00a0\u00a0More critically, even genuinely undecided voters were exhausted by the same criticism.\u00a0\u00a0They did not want more grievance.\u00a0\u00a0They wanted to know what a Harris administration would actually do for them.<\/p>\n

Harris offered almost nothing on the issues that decided the election: illegal immigration and the job competition it created, wage suppression, the trade deficit with China that had eliminated quality manufacturing jobs, or the housing and cost-of-living crisis squeezing middle-class families.\u00a0\u00a0She provided no blueprint.\u00a0\u00a0No economic vision.\u00a0\u00a0No forward argument.<\/p>\n

Trump, by contrast, ran roughly 80 percent of his campaign on what he was for \u2014 tariffs, border restrictions, energy dominance, America First trade \u2014 and only a fraction of it on attacking Harris.<\/p>\n

That strategic imbalance is the primary reason Harris lost.\u00a0\u00a0The autopsy does not address it.<\/p>\n

The Nomination Betrayal<\/h1>\n

The second failure is structural, and the autopsy\u00a0explicitly omits it: Harris was allowed to take over the ticket without anything resembling a democratic process for choosing a nominee.<\/p>

Joe Biden\u2019s original campaign platform was \u201cDemocracy on the Ballot.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0When he withdrew under pressure from donors and party leadership, no primaries were conducted.\u00a0\u00a0No alternative candidates were invited to file.\u00a0\u00a0Democrat delegates \u2014 nearly all of whom had earned their positions through the legitimate primary process that nominated Biden \u2014 were never given a free vote among alternatives.\u00a0\u00a0Harris was elevated quickly, from the top down.<\/p>\n

Had time been genuinely short, the party could have opened a convention ballot among multiple candidates and let delegates choose freely without establishment coercion.\u00a0\u00a0That is what a democratic process looks like under pressure.\u00a0\u00a0It did not happen.<\/p>\n

Voters notice when a party that claims democracy as its defining issue handles its own nomination in a way that looks managed and closed.\u00a0\u00a0The autopsy \u2014 which CNN\u2019s review confirmed omits any discussion of Harris taking over the ticket without a nominating process \u2014 does not grapple with this at all.\u00a0\u00a0The silence is not accidental.\u00a0\u00a0Admitting it would require the party to hold its own leadership accountable.<\/p>\n

What Else the Autopsy Buried<\/h1>\n

The list of omissions is staggering. The 192-page document contains\u00a0not a single mention of Biden\u2019s age\u00a0or his decision to run for re-election\u00a0despite clear public concern about his fitness.\u00a0\u00a0It contains no mention of Israel, Gaza, or the war\u2019s effect on Democrat turnout in swing states like Michigan \u2014 despite the fact that internal DNC research, reported by Axios in February 2026, had already concluded that the Biden administration\u2019s stance on Gaza cost Harris significant support among younger voters and progressives.\u00a0\u00a0It does not mention Harris\u2019s decision not to appear on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast, which many analysts consider a significant strategic error with male voters.<\/p>\n

These are not footnotes.\u00a0\u00a0They are central to understanding what happened.\u00a0\u00a0Their absence confirms that this autopsy was designed to protect the establishment from accountability.<\/p>\n

What Democrats Must Confront before 2026 and 2028<\/h1>\n

The pattern here is not new.\u00a0\u00a0The Democrat party conducted a review after the 2022 midterms, produced seven findings and five recommendations, and then \u2014 according to the autopsy itself \u2014 failed to follow through on any of them.\u00a0\u00a0A party that cannot learn from its own documented failures is not prepared to win.<\/p>\n

Two things must be confronted honestly if Democrats are to recover.\u00a0\u00a0First, the affirmative economic case \u2014 jobs, wages, housing, trade, cost of living \u2014 must become the center of gravity of any future campaign, not an afterthought to anti-Trump messaging that voters stopped responding to years ago.\u00a0\u00a0Second, the party must reckon with the fact that replacing a nominee through donor pressure and establishment consensus, without any open process, does lasting damage to its central message.\u00a0\u00a0You cannot campaign on democratic norms while subverting them internally.<\/p>\n

The autopsy, incomplete and defensive as it is, at least confirms one thing the report\u2019s own DNC annotators acknowledged: Harris lost the economic argument.\u00a0\u00a0That is the beginning of an honest reckoning.\u00a0\u00a0The rest of the document suggests that the party is not yet ready to finish it.<\/p>\n
