Congratulations!\u00a0\u00a0You\u2019ve\u00a0finished your high school, college,\u00a0grad\u00a0school,\u00a0or trade school\u00a0experience, and\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0being rewarded\u00a0for your work with a diploma,\u00a0certificate, or degree.\u00a0\u00a0Well done!\u00a0\u00a0Now\u00a0what are you going to do with it?\u00a0<\/p>

In the workforce, just doing your job \u201cokay\u201d might keep you in an entry-level role, but it\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0help you advance.\u00a0\u00a0And when there are layoffs or plant closures, the employees who were just \u201cokay\u201d might be the first to go, and\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0have the toughest time finding new jobs in\u00a0a\u00a0tough economy.<\/p>\n

Since your first job\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0fund the lifestyle you want, you need to strive for excellence, so that you can get \u2014 and deserve \u2014 promotions throughout your career.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0get some of the basics out of the\u00a0way, and\u00a0then address the issues that most people\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0told you until now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

First, the job hunt\u00a0probably doesn\u2019t\u00a0work the way you expect.\u00a0\u00a0Apply for a hundred jobs\u00a0or more,\u00a0with a\u00a0completely honest,\u00a0carefully written\u00a0and proofread\u00a0r\u00e9sum\u00e9\u00a0using lots of buzzwords.\u00a0\u00a0This is serious: In most cases, human eyes\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0see a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 until\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0already been selected, and computers are programmed to look for certain words to prove qualification for a role.\u00a0\u00a0For example,\u00a0I spent\u00a0my career\u00a0in transportation, which some people call logistics,\u00a0some call shipping, and\u00a0some call traffic.\u00a0\u00a0Which of these\u00a0synonyms would the hiring manager have programmed into his system as a requirement for consideration?\u00a0\u00a0If I guessed wrong, no human being even\u00a0saw\u00a0<\/em>my r\u00e9sum\u00e9, so I made sure\u00a0they were all\u00a0in there.\u00a0\u00a0The same goes for every talent, every specialty, every qualification.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Next, once you get your first job, start saving for retirement.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0think you can put it off until\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0making more money.\u00a0\u00a0If you learned nothing else from math class, learn this: The\u00a0magic of compounding interest\u00a0is most effective if it starts early.\u00a0\u00a0Start your retirement savings as soon as you start your first job.\u00a0\u00a0Always save at least as much in your\u00a0employer\u2019s 401(k) plan as your company will match, and then save more, separately, in your own external\u00a0investment\u00a0account.\u00a0\u00a0A lot more.\u00a0\u00a0The more you save, the earlier you start, the earlier you can retire with comfort, and the better\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be able to provide\u00a0for your children and grandchildren.<\/p>\n

And yes, as soon as\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0a responsible adult \u2014 which hopefully is today \u2014 start looking for Mister or Miss Right.\u00a0\u00a0Marrying young, and raising children young, is good for you and good for them.\u00a0\u00a0I know\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0tempting to think you\u2019ll\u00a0be better spouses and\u00a0better parents when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0older, after those promotions and raises start coming along.\u00a0\u00a0But\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0an odd thing about that: Whether they admit it or not, companies\u00a0usually see singles\u00a0as less\u00a0responsible,\u00a0and they see\u00a0married couples as more responsible.\u00a0\u00a0So\u00a0marriage often helps you get those promotions or employment changes.\u00a0\u00a0A wedding ring shows that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0willing to make a commitment and accept responsibility, two of the fundamental requirements for moving up the ladder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now for the hard news, the\u00a0truths from which\u00a0you may have been sheltered in college.<\/p>\n

America was an amazing, rapidly growing economic engine for a century, but for the past fifty years, that engine has been sputtering.\u00a0\u00a0We are now back on the right track, but some states are still resisting economic growth through high-tax, high-crime, and high-regulation policies.\u00a0\u00a0As a result, it may be time for you to consider moving.\u00a0\u00a0There are\u00a0states\u00a0currently welcoming business growth, creating\u00a0opportunity\u00a0for energetic young workers,\u00a0and there are\u00a0other\u00a0states happy in their stagnancy.\u00a0\u00a0It might be time to move.\u00a0\u00a0You have the happiness and prosperity of your future family to consider.\u00a0\u00a0Choose carefully.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Depending on your school, your major, and your peer group, much of what\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0been\u00a0told\u00a0the past few years has been completely wrong.\u00a0\u00a0For example,\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0been told that marijuana is harmless, that billionaires are the enemy, that labor should be outsourced to the Third World to make more profit for\u00a0pot-smoking millionaires-in-the-making here at home.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0all\u00a0hogwash.\u00a0\u00a0Pot\u00a0does\u00a0<\/em>do physical and mental damage (particularly in diminishing ambition and drive), and billionaires\u00a0are\u00a0<\/em>the ones who create jobs for the rest of us, and when you outsource jobs to the Third World, you are eliminating\u00a0needed\u00a0jobs here at home.\u00a0\u00a0If you want to be a well paid employee someday, you\u00a0need\u00a0<\/em>a well paid employer to hire you.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many of you \u2014 the chemists,\u00a0engineers,\u00a0and biomolecular researchers \u2014 have been told to become an expert at your job, and\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0do great.\u00a0\u00a0But that\u2019s not actually enough.\u00a0\u00a0In the real world,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not enough to be an expert at your job; you need to learn as much as you can about your colleagues\u2019 jobs,\u00a0too, and about all the other departments in your organization.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

No,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not talking about trying to take their jobs away from them.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0just that, for a modern company to succeed, it\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be made up of a bunch of silos that never interact.\u00a0\u00a0A company needs people who think\u00a0and work\u00a0cross-functionally.<\/p>\n

No matter\u00a0your role,\u00a0you need to understand enough about\u00a0production, and\u00a0marketing, and regulatory, and\u00a0purchasing, and quality, and finance, to be able\u00a0to\u00a0anticipate\u00a0their needs so that your own deliverable is also everyone else\u2019s deliverable.<\/p>\n

So\u00a0pay attention to your\u00a0colleagues, and\u00a0pay attention to your company\u2019s problems.\u00a0\u00a0When\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0the one who makes your company succeed, then you will succeed as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The old paradigm is being rewritten.\u00a0\u00a0A.I. means we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need to outsource documentation to India anymore.\u00a0\u00a0Robotics means we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need the cheap labor of China anymore.\u00a0\u00a0Tariffs mean foreign goods\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0as cheap as they used to be.\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0all\u00a0means\u00a0that\u00a0America\u00a0can\u00a0<\/em>be\u00a0competitive again, and American manufacturing\u00a0is responding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whether your teachers and professors have noticed it or not, the focus of today\u2019s American company is on re-shoring,\u00a0and even on-shoring \u2014 bringing back the supply chain from third-world vendors to convenient vendors\u00a0here at home.\u00a0\u00a0To some extent, that will be your job:\u00a0helping evaluate bids, updating blueprints, handling the PPAP approvals, writing new ISO procedures \u2014\u00a0supporting the change in vendors from\u00a0distant foreign\u00a0suppliers\u00a0to both established U.S. vendors and brand new U.S. startups, suppliers your employer\u00a0couldn\u2019t afford before but that are\u00a0now,\u00a0finally,\u00a0competitive again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For many of you, hopefully for most of you, this will be a wonderful opportunity: starting out in the business world during America\u2019s\u00a0Semiquincentennial, and being a part of America\u2019s manufacturing renaissance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

For\u00a0a very long\u00a0time, America\u2019s schools and\u00a0businesses\u00a0accepted the idea that America\u2019s days as the engine of the world were behind us.\u00a0\u00a0Whether they like it or not,\u00a0the nation is\u00a0finally\u00a0recognizing\u00a0the danger in such a belief.\u00a0<\/p>\n

America is back, and the young employees of today, the future managers of tomorrow, can be a part of straightening out the mess\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0inherited.\u00a0<\/p>\n

So\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0your job to bring America back from the brink.\u00a0\u00a0Finally,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0considered okay\u00a0again to make decisions based on\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0truly best for your company, your family, your neighbors, your\u00a0community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

By rebuilding the American business community,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0be rebuilding America.\u00a0<\/p>\n
