If nothing else, \u201cPride Month\u201d should remind clear-thinking people of how the meaning of a word can be stretched beyond recognition. Today, pride has been attached to accidents of birth rather than achievements of character. To be proud of one\u2019s race, gender, or sexual proclivity is to confuse fortune with accomplishment and identity with effort. Real pride, historically and logically, arises from what we build, create, and achieve — not from what we merely happen to be.<\/p>

There is a fundamental difference between things we choose and things we inherit. You can no more choose your race than you can choose the century you were born into. To take pride in such accidents of history is as irrational as being proud of having blue eyes or being left-handed. One might just as well boast about the weather on the day of one\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n

By contrast, genuine pride emerges from struggle, discipline, and creativity. The scientist who spends years in the lab, the artist who labors over canvas after canvas, and the entrepreneur who risks savings and reputation to build a business — these individuals have grounds for pride because their accomplishments required effort, sacrifice, and persistence. Pride in such cases is not mere vanity; it is the recognition of a hard-earned victory over obstacles that could just as easily have defeated them.<\/p>\n

One of the most dangerous forms of misplaced pride is collective pride in immutable characteristics. History is replete with examples of people who considered themselves superior because of their race, nationality, or lineage. The result has too often been conflict, oppression, and even war. When people take pride in traits they did nothing to achieve, they are tempted to look down on those who lack those traits — not because of what those others have done, but because of who they are.<\/p>\n

The irony is that collective pride often masks collective insecurity. The loudest proclamations of racial or national superiority have historically come not from those secure in their own accomplishments, but from those seeking to compensate for the absence of them. Hitler\u2019s Germany and Imperial Japan both cloaked themselves in racial superiority precisely at times when their societies faced deep political and economic crises.<\/p>\n

The modern fashion of attaching pride to sexuality or gender follows the same pattern. To be \u201cproud\u201d of one\u2019s sexual orientation is to take a private fact of life and treat it as an accomplishment. But it is not an accomplishment; it is a circumstance. What someone does with their life, their talents, their mind, and their time is the area where pride has meaning.<\/p>\n

When pride is detached from accomplishment, it risks becoming entitlement. If one is already \u201cproud\u201d by default — simply by existing as a member of a group — then the hard work of actually building something, creating something, or contributing something is unnecessary. In such a framework, recognition is owed, not earned. But a society built on unearned recognition cannot endure, because it undermines the very incentive structure that produces achievement in the first place.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\nThe beauty of pride rooted in accomplishment is that it empowers individuals. Anyone can cultivate discipline, pursue excellence, or create value. A person\u2019s race, gender, or background may influence the obstacles they face, but it does not determine their capacity for achievement. By placing pride in what is chosen and earned, rather than in what is given and immutable, we restore pride to its proper role: the reward of human effort.<\/p>

The great advances in human history — from the building of the pyramids to the mapping of the human genome — were not the result of people congratulating themselves for their ancestry. They were the result of relentless labor, ingenuity, and the refusal to accept mediocrity. That is the kind of pride that builds civilizations.<\/p>\n

When pride is misdirected, the costs are borne not only by individuals but by society. Schools that substitute identity politics for rigorous academics deprive students of the satisfaction that comes from mastering knowledge. Political movements that glorify victimhood rather than achievement trap entire communities in cycles of grievance rather than progress. Even at the personal level, those who root their pride in characteristics rather than accomplishments may find themselves hollow, for there is nothing sustaining in a pride that requires no effort.<\/p>\n

If pride is to mean anything, it must be tied once more to accomplishment. That means taking pride in raising children well, in mastering a craft, in building a business, in defending principles, or in creating art. It means being proud of what we do, not what we are. Only then does pride cease to be a hollow boast and become a legitimate source of dignity.<\/p>\n

Societies thrive when pride is linked to excellence. They decline when pride is divorced from achievement and reduced to slogans. The challenge before us is not to erase pride, but to restore it to its rightful place — as a reflection of human effort and accomplishment, not a consolation prize for immutable traits.<\/p>\n

The question is not whether people should feel pride, but what they should feel pride about. Pride without achievement is vanity; pride with achievement is dignity. The difference matters not only for individuals but also for civilizations. If pride is allowed to rest on mere identity, we risk raising generations content to inherit rather than to create. If, however, we insist that pride be earned through work, creativity, and accomplishment, we uphold the standards that have always propelled humanity forward.<\/p>\n
