Reading news articles, essays, and social media posts over the last few years has convinced me that conservatives and leftists now inhabit alternate universes.\u00a0\u00a0We\u2019re a Venn diagram with two circles that barely overlap.\u00a0\u00a0President Reagan once remarked that liberals \u201cknow so much that isn\u2019t so.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Today, many leftists offer declarative statements and accusations with absolute conviction but no grounding in fact.\u00a0\u00a0Sometimes it\u2019s misinformation; increasingly, it\u2019s disinformation \u2014 deliberately false claims meant to cause harm.<\/p>

The widespread circulation of these narratives through media and social platforms has done real damage.\u00a0\u00a0It has reduced trust in our institutions, polarized our society, warped public decision\u2011making, and produced real\u2011world harm by undermining shared reality.<\/p>\n

Examples abound: extreme political rhetoric, selective media coverage, climate alarmism that ignores data, and celebrity exaggerations that warp public understanding.\u00a0\u00a0Ironically, \u201cfact\u2011checkers\u201d and legacy outlets often fail to scrutinize claims from preferred political factions, allowing nonsense to spread unchecked.<\/p>\n

Political and racial hyperbole now poisons public discourse.\u00a0\u00a0Prominent figures routinely equate ordinary policy disagreements with historical atrocities.\u00a0\u00a0Rep. Ayanna Pressley has claimed the Trump administration seeks to return America \u201cnot even just to Jim Crow … but even to pre\u2011Reconstruction.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0I guess she\u2019s referring to when the Democrats owned the slaves.\u00a0\u00a0Florida Democrat Angie Nixon asserts that Republicans are trying to kill black people.\u00a0\u00a0Rosie O\u2019Donnell has claimed that ICE agents run \u201cconcentration camps\u201d where they impregnate migrant children.\u00a0\u00a0Art Garfunkel has threatened to leave the country over climate change.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m not sure how we\u2019ll manage if he joins Rosie O\u2019Donnell, Ellen DeGeneres, and James Cameron.<\/p>\n

Leftist pronouncements often contradict themselves in the same breath.\u00a0\u00a0Actress Sophie Turner recently explained her move back to the U.K. by saying she couldn\u2019t fathom being a mother of a child killed in Uvalde, insisting America \u201cwould rather have rights to guns than give kids a right to life.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0She then complained that women are being \u201cstripped of their rights\u201d to abortion.\u00a0\u00a0First she demands a \u201cright to life\u201d for children, and in the next breath, she laments limits on ending unborn children\u2019s lives.\u00a0\u00a0Do they not hear themselves?<\/p>\n

In one of the most self\u2011refuting headlines ever, KTSP\u2011News in Minnesota posted: \u201cMinnesota has now served 450 million free school meals as the program\u2019s cost continues to rise beyond early projections.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Make it make sense.<\/p>\n

Another tactic is selective silence \u2014 letting inconvenient stories \u201cdie on the vine.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Environmental alarmists, for example, have largely stopped discussing the Great Barrier Reef because years of dire predictions have been contradicted by data showing coral cover rebounding to near\u2011record levels.<\/p>\n

Crying wolf with exaggerated threats and false narratives drives expensive, ineffective, or panic\u2011driven policies.\u00a0\u00a0They desensitize the public when predictions fail and divert attention from measurable problems.\u00a0\u00a0When public figures accuse President Trump of being a pedophile or \u201cliterally Hitler,\u201d it dehumanizes him and, by extension, all conservatives.\u00a0\u00a0It inflames tensions, discourages compromise, and encourages hostility.\u00a0\u00a0When such claims face little pushback from mainstream outlets, they gain legitimacy and deepen fractures.<\/p>\n

Legacy media routinely downplay or ignore the consequences of open borders and crimes committed by illegal aliens.\u00a0\u00a0They rarely acknowledge the slow\u2011motion collapse of cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, and Chicago.\u00a0\u00a0If a story highlights Democrat failures, it\u2019s ignored; if it showcases Republican successes, it disappears.\u00a0\u00a0I have yet to see a legacy outlet congratulate Tom Homan and his team for rescuing over a hundred thousand migrant children trafficked into the country under the Biden administration.<\/p>

The result is that leftists and conservatives no longer share a common factual universe.\u00a0\u00a0Republicans have little in common with Democrats beyond occupying the same patch of ground.\u00a0\u00a0Not long ago, everyone agreed that killing children is evil.\u00a0\u00a0Now mothers who kill their unborn children are celebrated, and people like Lindsay Clancy get fan clubs.\u00a0\u00a0Governors sign bills legalizing abortion up to the moment of birth while surrounded by cheering supporters.\u00a0\u00a0Squatters are protected by law, illegal aliens receive government\u2011issued driver\u2019s licenses, and some may soon be eligible for jobs in the Danbury, Connecticut police department.<\/p>\n

Can you name anything a prominent leftist has said or done in the last 25 years that has made America safer, stronger, more prosperous, and more united?<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, some accountability exists \u2014 fraudsters are being prosecuted, and violent illegal aliens are being apprehended.\u00a0\u00a0Conservatives are becoming more informed and more vocal in countering leftist narratives.\u00a0\u00a0We no longer care what the left says, nor do we believe anything leftists say.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, when they speak, we usually assume the opposite is true.<\/p>\n

But more remedies are needed.\u00a0\u00a0Media and public figures must face consequences when they push disinformation.\u00a0\u00a0We need greater viewpoint diversity, consistent fact\u2011checking regardless of ideology, and a restoration of cultural norms that reward evidence over emotional hyperbole.<\/p>\n

What we do not need is censorship.\u00a0\u00a0Let leftists talk \u2014 they reveal how dangerously unmoored from reality they are.<\/p>\n

A society that loses its fear of being wrong, or its capacity to correct falsehoods, invites the very lunacy that emerges when disinformation faces no scrutiny.\u00a0\u00a0Truth\u2011seeking \u2014 not narrative protection \u2014 is the only sustainable defense.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, someone should tell Art Garfunkel the Great Barrier Reef is doing just fine.<\/p>
