This September 11 marks the 25th anniversary of the greatest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Almost 3,000 of our fellow Americans perished during the attacks, with many others later dying from illnesses related to exposure to toxic dust and other hazardous contaminants.<\/p>

With the passage of time, we can begin to examine how the \u201cWar on Terror\u201d has actually changed us. On September 20, 2001, then-President George W. Bush told Congress and the American people that America\u2019s war on terror would begin with al-Qaeda but would not end there. On October 7, the United States launched military operations in Afghanistan, where al-Qaeda operated terrorist training camps under the protection of the Taliban.<\/p>\n

Two years later, we began the invasion of Iraq, a hostile regime that the Bush administration believed possessed weapons of mass destruction. After years of fighting and thousands of casualties, we severely weakened al-Qaeda and drove the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. In Iraq, we overthrew Saddam Hussein\u2019s brutal regime, fought al-Qaeda and other insurgent forces, and oversaw the establishment of a new democratic government.<\/p>\n

In the ensuing years, we killed countless terrorists in drone strikes and other military operations throughout Africa and the Middle East, but for every terrorist killed, others seemed to rise to take his place.<\/p>\n

Fast-forward 25 years. The Taliban are firmly back in power in Afghanistan, where terrorist organizations again maintain a presence. Iraq continues to struggle with armed militias, Iranian influence, and remnants of ISIS, despite retaining a functioning government and security forces.<\/p>\n

Twenty-five years ago, after 9\/11, American flags appeared on houses and cars throughout the country. Today, demonstrators routinely burn the American flag while waving Palestinian flags and, at times, the hammer and sickle flag of our former Cold War adversary.<\/p>\n

Twenty-five years ago, Americans proclaimed their unity and love of country. Today, Americans are deeply divided, while some protesters march through American cities chanting \u201cDeath to America,\u201d and antisemitism has surged.<\/p>\n

Twenty-five years ago, law enforcement officers and members of the military were honored and extolled for their service and bravery. Today, demonstrators and politicians have called for defunding or dismantling police departments and sharply reducing the nation\u2019s military institutions.<\/p>

Twenty-five years ago, family values and religious institutions enjoyed broad respect. Today, traditional family values are routinely mocked and derided, while houses of worship are attacked and vandalized.<\/p>\n

Twenty-five years ago, Americans were unified in their condemnation of the terrorist attacks. Today, New York City\u2014Ground Zero for those attacks\u2014has a mayor whose positions on Islam, Israel, and the phrase \u201cglobalize the intifada\u201d have generated intense controversy. Meanwhile, some political candidates associate with figures who have openly said that America \u201cdeserved 9\/11.\u201d<\/p>\n

These facts force us to confront an uncomfortable truth: Nobody may be working harder to bring down the United States than some Americans themselves.<\/p>\n

Strangely, though, the Americans who hate and despise their country rarely want to leave it for greener pastures, and of the few who do, many eventually return. It is also odd that, despite the hatred and vitriol directed against the United States by some of our own political leaders and by voices in mainstream and social media, probably billions of foreign nationals would move here today if they had the opportunity. Millions already entered the country illegally during the previous administration.<\/p>\n

Long ago, historian Will Durant observed that \u201cA great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.\u201d<\/p>\n

History may yet prove how prophetic those words were.<\/p>\n
