There is a moment in every emerging technology cycle when a government tips its hand. It happened with the internet in the 1990s, with rare earth minerals in the 2010s, and now, quietly, it is happening with food.<\/p>

Earlier this year, the Canadian government rolled out a four-billion-dollar National Food Security Strategy, and buried inside it is a detail that should have every serious person in Washington paying attention. Seven hundred fifty million dollars of that money is earmarked specifically for what the industry calls Controlled Environment Agriculture, better known to most people as indoor and vertical farming. Six hundred fifty million of it is going toward technology adoption: robotics, advanced lighting, automation. The rest is aimed at building food independence in rural and northern communities that have spent decades depending on trucked-in produce.<\/p>\n

Read between the lines, and the message is simple. Ottawa is no longer treating food as a grocery store problem. It is treating it as a national security problem, the same way we treat energy, semiconductors, and rare earth minerals. And when one Western government starts writing a nine-figure check to secure a strategic resource, it is rarely the last one to do so.<\/p>\n

America has been here before. We watched China corner the market on solar-panel manufacturing while we debated whether it was worth subsidizing. We watched the electric vehicle industry get seeded by government money and turn into one of the largest wealth-creation events in a generation. Tesla did not become a trillion-dollar company because electric cars were a novelty. It became one because a government-backed technology shift turned an entire industry inside out, and one company got there first with the brand and the execution to match.<\/p>\n

Vertical farming is set up to be the next version of that story, and conservatives should be the ones telling it, not ceding it to the left as a green energy talking point. This is not about climate ideology. This is about supply chains. It is about a country that does not want to be at the mercy of drought, foreign shipping routes, or hostile governments for something as basic as lettuce. That is a national security argument, and it is one Republicans have made effectively on energy for years. Food deserves the same treatment.<\/p>

If Canada is right, and Washington eventually follows with its own version of this investment, the winners will not be decided by the size of the government check. They will be decided by who already has the technology, the operating experience, and the brand recognition when the money starts flowing. That is exactly how it played out with electric vehicles. The subsidies did not create Tesla. Tesla was already there, building the technology and the brand, when the subsidies arrived and sent the whole sector into hypergrowth.<\/p>\n

Watching this space closely, one Canadian company keeps surfacing as the name to know: Sky Farms. They are building exactly the kind of proven, scalable indoor growing infrastructure that a government suddenly worried about food security would want to fund, replicate, and export. They are early. They are positioned in the same market Ottawa just put $750 million behind. And if vertical farming follows anything like the trajectory electric vehicles did, being the recognized leader when the government money shows up is not a small advantage. It is the whole game.<\/p>\n

Republicans have spent years correctly warning that dependence on foreign adversaries for energy and critical minerals is a national security liability. Food is no different, and arguably more urgent, since you cannot negotiate with a population that is hungry. Canada just put a price tag on that realization. The question now is whether American policymakers, and American investors, recognize the signal before the rest of the market does.<\/p>
