We live in a country whose achievements are unmatched in human history: a people who defeated global tyranny, expanded prosperity on a scale once unimaginable, and built an era of relative peace that earlier generations might have considered miraculous. Even our poorest citizens frequently live lives that would be considered comfortable by the middle classes of many nations. Yet this extraordinary record is dismissed or ignored by far too many people, even as millions abroad would trade places with them in a heartbeat.

Read more Let NATO’s Free-Riders Fight WWIII

How did we move from a culture shaped by the Greatest Generation — disciplined, grateful, and duty-bound — to a consumption culture that devours the fruits of civilization while scorning the roots that made them possible? Let’s first define the term:

Consumption culture is not merely the act of buying things; it is the belief that personal satisfaction is the highest good, that comfort is a right, and that meaning can be acquired rather than earned.

The consumption generation inherited extraordinary wealth, technological abundance, political freedom, unprecedented mobility and communication, and a level of personal comfort that most humans throughout history could scarcely have imagined. Because those blessings were simply there, people began to treat them as the natural state of the world rather than the hard-won product of institutions, discipline, sacrifice, property rights, markets, families, faith, innovation, accumulated capital, and individual risk. Inheritors mistook the fruit for the source. They rest comfortably in the shade of trees whose planters they never knew, frequently despising them and unable or unwilling to imagine the labor that made their comfort possible.

This is where consumption became something more than an economic behavior. It became a substitute for essential understanding, leading to a detachment from reality. Older generations were taught that life involved obligations beyond themselves. Family, faith, work, community, country, and responsibility gave people reasons to sacrifice today for something they might never personally enjoy. Sacrifice became central to the idea of leaving this world better than we found it.

Somewhere along the way, we began to see ourselves as the center of our own universe. Consumption offered a much easier proposition: Happiness could be purchased, displayed, experienced, and renewed with little effort or risk. The more people acquired, the more they came to associate acquisition with progress and satisfaction with success.

Eventually, the consumer became both the worshipper and the god: my wants are important simply because I want them; effectively, a tautology.

Americans have become consumers of civilization itself.

We increasingly evaluate our country the way we evaluate a product. Does it please me? Does it entertain me? Does it give me what I want right now? If it does not, something must be wrong with the product.

But civilization is not a product; it is an inheritance. It was built by people who accepted responsibilities they did not invent, preserved institutions they did not create, and sacrificed for people they would never meet. They understood that prosperity was something to be protected and passed on, not merely consumed.

A culture organized around consumption eventually forgets what made it possible. The more abundance people receive, the more easily they mistake what they have for what they are owed. Expectations rise faster than gratitude, while dissatisfaction becomes normalized. Prosperity becomes an entitlement, no longer understood as something that requires effort to produce and preserve.

Read more When the Algorithm Becomes the Gatekeeper: What AI Hiring Means for Merit

Once entitlement becomes an expectation, disappointment requires an explanation. If the system cannot satisfy every desire, the system must be corrupt. If some have more than others, the system must be unjust. If life contains limitations, someone must be held responsible. This creates fertile ground for America’s current flirtation with socialism, even communism, ideologies that promise to replace unequal outcomes with collective guarantees.

The same mentality appears in other forms. In many institutions shaped by modern progressive thought, disparities are increasingly explained through a framework of privilege and identity rather than differences in behavior, family structure, culture, or personal choices. The concept of white privilege — once an academic theory — has migrated into university curricula, corporate DEI programs, government training, and popular culture. When such a framework becomes the dominant explanation for unequal outcomes, achievement can be interpreted as evidence of privilege rather than effort, discipline, talent, or risk. Failure, in turn, need not be something to overcome. Responsibility is displaced by grievance.

This is why consumption is so destructive as a source of meaning: there is no natural endpoint. There is always another possession, another experience, another convenience, another demand. Satisfaction is temporary, while desire is virtually limitless.

A nation can begin to self-destruct without an invading army or an economic catastrophe. It simply forgets what its prosperity cost, confuses abundance with entitlement, and turns dissatisfaction against the institutions, habits, and values that created that abundance. The greatest danger is not that Americans have too much; it is that they have so much that they have forgotten how extraordinary it is to have it at all.

The god of consumption demands no faith, no sacrifice, and no gratitude. It asks only that we want more, then convinces us that wanting more is evidence that we deserve it. Citizens increasingly view their country as consumers, expecting prosperity and satisfaction as rights society is obligated to provide. Because consumption itself is unfulfilling, we are condemned to perpetual dissatisfaction. The tragic irony is that we have come to resent the very civilization that gave us the abundance we can’t imagine living without.

Every generation receives institutions, knowledge, capital, laws, customs, and freedoms it did not create. It can consume that inheritance, or it can preserve and improve it for those who follow.

The next chapter of our national story will reflect whether we remember what it took to build the world we so casually consume.

Author, Businessman, Thinker, and Strategist.
