\u201cCanada had a great military.\u00a0\u00a0They were right there at the forefront on the beaches of D-Day, and what the Canadian government has done to the Canadian Armed Forces, if you look at the ranks of NATO spending, they are near the very bottom, like they\u2019re cellar dwellers around with Spain in terms of their military spending to GDP.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Instead of investing in its military and national security, Canada spent that money on \u201cglobal warming\u201d fantasies and welfare goodies while taking advantage of America\u2019s \u201cfree\u201d security services.<\/p>\n

In economics, free-rider problems arise when people benefit from shared resources without fairly paying for them.\u00a0\u00a0In the context of military security, almost every member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been free-riding on the United States for decades.\u00a0\u00a0Even though treaty obligations require each nation to pay its fair share for the common defense of the military alliance, Canada and European countries have depended upon American taxpayers to shoulder the burden of providing security for most of the West.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Recently, some members have touted imaginary \u201cincreases\u201d in defense spending by relabeling non-military projects as \u201cmilitary\u201d expenditures.\u00a0\u00a0Canada\u2019s Mark Carney, for instance, has created an\u00a0investment bank\u00a0that uses taxpayer dollars to fund Ukrainian reconstruction projects and \u201cclimate change\u201d initiatives.\u00a0\u00a0Although the central-banker-turned-prime-minister utilizes this investment fund to pay for pet projects that have nothing to do with national security, Canada counts every monetary transaction as part of its NATO defense spending obligations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The United States has allowed this free-rider problem to persist for many reasons.\u00a0\u00a0NATO was birthed in the wake of WWII and the start of the Cold War with the Soviet Union.\u00a0\u00a0As such, maintaining peace in Europe and providing effective deterrence to Soviet expansion were paramount goals.\u00a0\u00a0European economies and infrastructure lay in ruins.\u00a0\u00a0The U.S. emerged from WWII as both a military and economic superpower.\u00a0\u00a0Transitioning from a nation state into a veritable empire with global reach, the U.S. accepted that its unparalleled powers came with unparalleled responsibilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, seventy-seven years after NATO\u2019s formation, the military alliance\u2019s free-rider problem has distorted reality in significant ways.\u00a0\u00a0First, member nations pocketed the \u201csavings\u201d derived from having the U.S. ensure their security and redirected government spending away from their own militaries and toward ever-growing social welfare programs.\u00a0\u00a0Second, even though the U.S. provides the bulk of NATO defenses, alliance members conduct their affairs on the world stage as if they possess substantially more military resources than they would otherwise have at their disposal absent assurances from the United States.<\/p>\n

The first departure from reality has prompted Canada, the United Kingdom, and much of the European Union to embrace forms of socialism that are antithetical to personal property rights, individual liberty, and free markets.\u00a0\u00a0While heavily regulating their economies and stifling economic growth with \u201cgreen energy\u201d mandates that drive out businesses and increase the cost of consumer goods, beneficiaries of NATO\u2019s security welfare have reallocated their defense budgets toward \u201cfree\u201d services for their own welfare states.\u00a0\u00a0Without the U.S. military defending their sovereignties, Canada, the U.K., and the E.U. would not have had the money for public healthcare, housing, transportation, food, and other generous handouts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In other words, U.S. taxpayers have been subsidizing socialism throughout the West that would have been prohibitively expensive had NATO\u2019s members been forced to defend themselves.\u00a0\u00a0Likewise, Canada and Europe would not have been able to waste so much money on \u201cglobal warming\u201d delusions or \u201cgreen energy\u201d money-laundering projects had they been forced to govern responsibly.\u00a0\u00a0Lastly, these NATO members would not have become magnets for tens of millions of foreign invaders had Western governments directed their budgets toward securing national borders, rather than providing \u201cfree\u201d stuff for every illegal immigrant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Absent American security guarantees created through NATO, the true costs of socialism would have been laid bare: Heavily regulated nations hostile toward property rights and entrepreneurial freedom would not have been able to pursue unsustainable welfare programs or economically suicidal \u201cclimate change\u201d fantasies.<\/p>\n

The second departure from reality is perhaps even more dangerous.\u00a0\u00a0For many decades, NATO members followed the lead of the United States.\u00a0\u00a0That made sense because NATO is an empty threat without American military assets and personnel.\u00a0\u00a0Right now member nations are bucking the U.S.\u00a0\u00a0They have refused to assist American operations in the Strait of Hormuz, as President Trump and the U.S. military work to eliminate Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions and the \u201cterror premium\u201d it extracts from oil shipments.\u00a0\u00a0Simultaneously, NATO members have become increasingly belligerent toward the Russian Federation.\u00a0\u00a0As the European Union\u2019s economically suicidal \u201cgreen energy\u201d policies have made it dependent upon oil and natural gas from Russia, the Middle East, and the United States, the choice to appease Iran while provoking Russia increases the likelihood of Europe\u2019s economic collapse.<\/p>\n

For his part, President Trump has been clear that the United States and the Russian Federation should do everything possible to limit direct confrontation.\u00a0\u00a0Trump views the war in Ukraine as a stupid and unnecessary conflict that never would have occurred under his watch.\u00a0\u00a0But for NATO\u2019s continued eastward advance right up to Russia\u2019s borders and the European and American-instigated\u00a02014\u00a0coup d\u2019\u00e9tat<\/em>\u00a0in Ukraine, this war would not be raging today.\u00a0\u00a0Since his return to office in 2025, the president has worked to end the killing and destruction.\u00a0\u00a0Rather than follow Trump\u2019s lead, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Commission have continued to pledge military support for Ukraine despite the fact that Ukraine is neither a member of NATO nor part of the European Union.\u00a0\u00a0It is highly unlikely that Canada and Europe\u2019s NATO members would be\u00a0expanding the war\u00a0today if they did not have Uncle Sam\u2019s NATO commitments in place.<\/p>\n

WWII began on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland.\u00a0\u00a0In another example of how history might not repeat but often rhymes, September 1, 2026, is the day that Germany accused Russia of committing an\u00a0act of war.\u00a0\u00a0A small quadcopter drone carrying an improvised explosive was found near Ukrainian cargo planes at the Leipzig-Halle Airport on August 4.\u00a0\u00a0After a month-long investigation, German authorities have pinned the \u201cdrone attack\u201d on low-level Russian agents.\u00a0\u00a0Germany raised its threat level assessment to \u201chigh\u201d and kicked Russian diplomats out of the country.\u00a0\u00a0A prominent German defense executive\u00a0says, \u201cGermany and Russia are at war.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Russia\u00a0called\u00a0the allegation \u201cnonsensical\u201d and \u201cfar-fetched\u201d and compared it to European leaders\u2019 false 2022 accusation that Russia had blown up the Nord Stream gas pipelines, an act of sabotage that appears to have been the work of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, NATO members rushed to declare their willingness to fight Russia.\u00a0\u00a0Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk\u00a0assured\u00a0NATO\u2019s support for Ukraine against Russia.\u00a0\u00a0European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen\u00a0wrote, \u201c[T]he EU stands in full solidarity with Germany in the face of this attack by Russia.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte followed suit, all\u00a0accusing\u00a0Russia of a \u201chybrid attack\u201d against a NATO member country.\u00a0\u00a0In Brussels, European leaders are assembling a\u00a0war cabinet.\u00a0\u00a0At the same time, Ukraine\u2019s holdover-president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy,\u00a0threatened\u00a0the safety of civilian airliners flying through Russian airspace.\u00a0\u00a0Russian President Vladimir Putin\u00a0called\u00a0Zelenskyy\u2019s threat \u201ca move toward state terrorism\u201d that would necessitate \u201ca response.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canada and Europe\u2019s NATO members want more war.\u00a0\u00a0Non-NATO Ukraine wants more war.\u00a0\u00a0The United States should get out of the way.\u00a0\u00a0Let the free-riders fight WWIII.<\/p>
