Democrat U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico \u201chas taken his message into church pulpits and campaign venues alike, citing biblical texts as justification for broader health care coverage, care for veterans, and protections for immigrants,\u201d according to NPR.\u00a0\u00a0That distorted message has plagued our nation for almost a century.<\/p>

When we see someone in need, whose responsibility is it to help?\u00a0\u00a0For Christians, it is our moral responsibility as individuals to help.\u00a0\u00a0Christ commanded us to love our neighbor and to persuade others, as individuals, to do likewise.<\/p>\n

What is problematic is when politicians invoke sympathy and confuse compassion with public policy.\u00a0\u00a0With compassion comes responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0Without responsibility and a moral compass, chaos will reign supreme in our nation.<\/p>\n

Christ\u2019s commandment to love God and to love my neighbor as myself was not directed to Congress.\u00a0\u00a0It was not conditioned upon the enactment of a government program.\u00a0\u00a0It did not instruct me to determine how much someone else should contribute before deciding whether my obligation had been satisfied.\u00a0\u00a0It was personal.<\/p>\n

That distinction has become increasingly blurred in our economic and political conversations.\u00a0\u00a0We frequently identify a genuine human need and move almost immediately to a public policy question: What should government do about it?<\/p>\n

If I oppose a government program because I believe individuals, churches, families and voluntary organizations should care for those in need, another question immediately follows about what am I doing about the problem, if anything.\u00a0\u00a0It is difficult to argue that helping the poor is a personal responsibility while personally doing very little to help them.<\/p>\n

Economic freedom increases our individual responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0Capitalism is extraordinarily effective at creating wealth, encouraging innovation, and allowing millions of people to make independent economic choices.\u00a0\u00a0But a free economic system cannot depend solely upon laws, contracts, and markets.<\/p>\n

Responsible capitalism requires something government cannot manufacture: a moral compass.<\/p>\n
