It starts out with a childless, eccentric hipster couple who have labored lovingly to fix up a home in an older neighborhood in Portland. They have poured their heart into getting it just the way they want it. However, after finishing, they feel that something is missing. It is not as cozy a setting as they had wished. To correct it, they go down to the local rescue center and bring home a cat to make their dwelling seem more like a home. After a few weeks of blissful existence in their comfortable home they start to feel guilty as every good liberal must. They realize that the spare room with kitchenette and bathroom over their detached garage, which they had planned to rent out, would be better used as housing for some unfortunate woman of color and her restless brood. The next day, they go down to the local homeless shelter and return with a colored migrant and her three children and install them in the small but tidy apartment above their garage. They now rest peacefully knowing that they have done their part in making the world a better and kinder place.<\/p>

However, their peace of mind does not last for long. From the apartment comes loud West African rap music that blends traditional African rhythms with hip-hop. It is punctuated by the woman reprimanding her children for unseen offenses. The couple realizes that it would be culturally insensitive to tell their tenant to keep the music and shouting to a minimum, so they accept the inconvenience that it presents at 2 AM. Then one morning they cannot find fluffy, their beloved adopted cat. They recall a foreign cooking smell that was wafting from the detached garage kitchen, but suppress the thought that it might have something to do with their missing pet.<\/p>\n

Days later, they find that the flowers and vegetables that they have so tenderly cared for in their garden have been trampled on by little feet. This is closely followed by the presence of a strange car parked overnight in their driveway, and the smell of marijuana settling in the air outside. Then one night at 3 AM, they hear shouts and slapping over the din of music coming from the apartment, followed by the arrival of police to referee a dispute between a man and their tenant.<\/p>

The next morning, our patient couple realize they must have a talk with their guest about acceptable behavior. After walking up the stairs to the garage apartment, they find the door ajar and the apartment in disarray. They find the children cowering in the bathroom and their mother sprawled out nude in the bedroom strangled to death. At this point, they realize that they have gotten in over their head. After social services have whisked the children off to foster care and the police have processed the crime scene, they vow to never again get up-close and personal with the focus of their humanitarian concern. They will exercise their humane urges by blowing whistles at ICE agents or going to \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies instead.<\/p>
