I’ve seen more than a few flags flying at half-staff this Memorial Day weekend, and I just want to scream NO!<\/p>

I don’t care what you are “supposed” to do.\u00a0On this day, we need to fly the American flag higher, larger, and more magnificently than any other day of the year. This is not a time for mourning but for celebration and appreciation.<\/p>\n

I agree with General George Patton — who knew more than a little about fighting and dying:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.\u201d<\/p>

Another general who also knew fighting and dying, Douglas MacArthur, noted:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey died hard, those savage men — like wounded wolves at bay. They were filthy, and they were lousy, and they stunk. And I loved them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Love them too. Love them with all your heart. Thank God that such men and women lived. Celebrate their magnificence.\u00a0But please don’t mourn, and please keep those flags flying high to let them know we will never forget.<\/p>\n
