This is the season of political polling.\u00a0\u00a0Between now and Election Day, voters will be told almost daily that someone is surging, collapsing, closing the gap, pulling away, or suddenly vulnerable.<\/p>

Polls appear scientific.\u00a0\u00a0They come with precise percentages, sample sizes, field dates, and margins of error.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cOur candidate is gaining\u201d sounds like campaign advertising.\u00a0\u00a0A poll showing the candidate gaining three points looks like objective evidence.<\/p>\n

Polling was developed to measure political reality.\u00a0\u00a0Increasingly, it is also being used to manufacture political reality.<\/p>\n

A favorable poll can attract donors, produce endorsements, generate national attention, discourage opponents, and persuade political organizations to invest in a race.\u00a0\u00a0Once repeated by campaigns, news organizations, aggregators, and prediction markets, one poll can create the appearance of an established trend.<\/p>\n

In the wrong hands, polling is becoming a new form of deepfake.\u00a0\u00a0A fabricated video places recognizable people inside an invented event.\u00a0\u00a0A misleading poll places plausible percentages and scientific language inside an invented or distorted political reality.\u00a0\u00a0Both gain credibility because they look like familiar forms of evidence.<\/p>\n

As is often said, every good lie contains a kernel of truth.\u00a0\u00a0The most effective misleading poll may contain real respondents, calculations, and percentages.\u00a0\u00a0What makes it misleading is how those elements were selected, adjusted, presented, and used.<\/p>\n

Pollsters have many technical ways to influence results: wording or ordering questions to encourage certain answers, deciding whom to contact and classify as a likely voter, oversampling particular groups, weighting demographic or partisan categories, reallocating undecided respondents, and selectively releasing favorable findings.<\/p>\n

Some are legitimate methodological judgments made in good faith.\u00a0\u00a0Every serious poll requires decisions about sampling, weighting, and turnout.\u00a0\u00a0But the same tools necessary to conduct a legitimate poll can push the results toward a preferred conclusion.\u00a0\u00a0Published percentages rarely tell readers which is which.<\/p>\n

Recent elections have provided unusually clear examples.<\/p>\n

Median Strategies released purported polls showing Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass leading challenger Nithya Raman by nearly 12 points and Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong ahead by a commanding margin.\u00a0\u00a0Bass promoted her favorable result.\u00a0\u00a0Hong appeared so inevitable that another prominent candidate, Mandela Barnes, withdrew and identified her as the likely nominee.<\/p>\n

Hong lost the primary to David Crowley.<\/p>\n

Median then admitted that the polls were fabricated, withdrew them, and shut down its website.\u00a0\u00a0It called the operation a \u201cshort-term social experiment\u201d designed to see how easily false polling could enter the political information system.<\/p>\n

Whatever its actual motive, the experiment answered the question.\u00a0\u00a0Invented polls from an unknown organization were circulated by campaigns, reported by news outlets, and absorbed into the political narrative before anyone established that the surveys were real.\u00a0\u00a0The Bass poll even produced activity on political prediction markets.<\/p>\n

Florida provided a different form of manipulation.\u00a0\u00a0During the Republican gubernatorial primary, a poll associated with James Fishback showed him running a strong second to eventual nominee Byron Donalds.\u00a0\u00a0The pollster later acknowledged that its respondents had placed Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins in the twenties.\u00a0\u00a0Because that did not agree with the firm\u2019s \u201cread of the race,\u201d it moved some Collins supporters toward Fishback.<\/p>\n

In plain English, respondents who selected Collins were reported as supporting someone else.<\/p>

The election supplied a useful reality check.\u00a0\u00a0Donalds won with approximately 48 percent.\u00a0\u00a0Collins finished second with about 25 percent.\u00a0\u00a0Fishback received approximately 10.5 percent.\u00a0\u00a0The original responses were much closer to what voters actually did than the pollster\u2019s preferred interpretation.<\/p>\n

Complete fabrication and reassignment of answers are extreme.\u00a0\u00a0More commonly, a poll can create a false impression without falsifying the interviews.<\/p>\n

Consider Pennsylvania\u2019s First Congressional District.\u00a0\u00a0Two internal polls by Global Strategy Group showed Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick leading Democrat Bob Harvie.\u00a0\u00a0The first reported 48-42; the second reported 47-43. Fitzpatrick\u2019s measured lead changed from six points to four.<\/p>\n

That small difference was within normal sampling variation.\u00a0\u00a0It did not establish that Harvie had gained or Fitzpatrick had declined.\u00a0\u00a0Both polls showed Fitzpatrick leading.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the second produced claims that Harvie was \u201cclosing the gap,\u201d was \u201cwithin the margin of error,\u201d and had made the district increasingly flippable.\u00a0\u00a0Those claims generated coverage and could influence prediction markets and race ratings, which may then be cited as additional evidence that the race is changing.<\/p>\n

There is another danger between the poll and the public: the person interpreting it.\u00a0\u00a0Candidates, journalists, and commentators routinely pontificate about candidates being \u201ctied,\u201d \u201csurging,\u201d or \u201cwithin the margin of error\u201d without understanding what those terms mean.<\/p>\n

A small change between polls may be statistical variation rather than voter movement.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWithin the margin of error\u201d does not mean the race is tied.\u00a0\u00a0A poll showing one candidate ahead still shows that candidate ahead, although it may not measure the lead precisely.\u00a0\u00a0A confident voice is no substitute for competent analysis.<\/p>\n

None of this means all polling is fraudulent or useless.\u00a0\u00a0Properly designed polls remain valuable.\u00a0\u00a0Nor does using a partisan pollster automatically make a survey false.\u00a0\u00a0Republican and Democratic campaigns both commission legitimate research.<\/p>\n

Voters do not need to become statisticians, but they should ask:<\/p>\n

Who paid for the poll and who conducted it, and are they related?<\/p>\n

Were the questions relevant, and did the sample represent those likely to vote?<\/p>\n

Do the numbers support the headline, campaign claim, or commentator\u2019s interpretation?<\/p>\n

Are several reports independent, or are they repeating one original poll?<\/p>\n

A legitimate poll is a useful but imperfect snapshot.\u00a0\u00a0A campaign poll may be both research and advertising.\u00a0\u00a0A manipulated poll is political messaging disguised as mathematics.\u00a0\u00a0A fabricated poll is a deepfake made of numbers.<\/p>\n

During this polling season, voters should examine not only what the numbers appear to say, but whether those numbers \u2014 and the claims made about them \u2014 are reasonable and true, just as they should with every other piece of campaign information.<\/p>
