While the term \u201cwoke\u201d arose in the mid-20th century to describe and keep alive within the public eye the claim of racism toward black America, leftist groups have over-extended its usage to the far reaches of society. Today, it includes the most ridiculous claims in an effort to undermine basic common sense and, as such, has developed a negative connotation. The recent examples of wokeness by a British agency responsible for recreational maritime safety underscores this, causing the shaking of one\u2019s head in total disbelief, pleading, \u201cSay it ain\u2019t so!\u201d<\/p>\n

Britain\u2019s Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the national governing body for operational safety rules related to dinghy, motor, and sail cruising, and the leading representative body for inland waterways cruising in the UK. Created in 1875, its focus is supposed to be on water safety-related issues\u2014but it appears to consider within this responsibility a need to promote changing historically genderistic terms into non-genderistic ones. One of these offensive terms identified is \u201cman overboard.\u201d<\/p>\n

RYA claims that more inclusive language is needed to recognize the \u201chonours and values\u201d of women and non-binary people who are involved in sailing. It promotes as an alternative to \u201cman overboard\u201d the phrase \u201cperson in water.\u201d They\u2019re mandating a longer phase in a time of emergency\u2014 \u201cman overboard\u201d has four syllables, \u201cperson in water\u201d has five\u2014and one can only imagine how upset a victim falling overboard would feel if the non-inclusive phrase were used.<\/p>\n

Critics have not hesitated to condemn the term change as \u201cbalderdash,\u201d suggesting a \u201cturning in their graves\u201d by old seafarers and sailors.<\/p>

Apparently at wit\u2019s end in cleansing the gendered vocabulary used by its members, RYA has also recommended avoiding the use of words like \u201cseamanship\u201d\u2014opting instead for \u201cboat handling,\u201d\u00a0\u201cnavigation,\u201d \u201cdeck work,\u201d or \u201cmaintenance\u201d as replacements\u2014and, instead of \u201csportsmanship\u201d you are to use \u201csporting behaviour.\u201d Additionally, \u201cwinchman\u201d should be replaced with \u201cperson on the winch\u201d or \u201cwinchperson.\u201d Now that you understand how this RYA namegame is played, it should not be difficult to guess what RYA seeks as an alternative to the term \u201chelmsman:\u201d it simply becomes \u201chelm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps in an effort to show a deference to males based on a term with a female connotation, the RYA also proposes eliminating usage of the term \u201cmother duties\u201d\u2014which inappropriately suggest cooking and cleaning duties on board fall only to women. In its place, the term \u201ccooking and cleaning duties\u201d is deemed inclusive.<\/p>\n

These RYA term changes tempt one to shout \u201cbalderdash!\u201d However, one is reluctant to do so for fear that the word \u201cbald\u201d therein might suggest male exclusivity.<\/p>
