The stupidity of antisemitism is simply bigotry, one of mankind\u2019s oldest, ugliest, and most irrational hatreds. There is nothing intellectually interesting about judging a person for being Jewish. There is nothing intellectually defensible about judging an entire race, religion, or ethnicity by the sins, politics, or actions of another sharing that identity.<\/strong> In supposedly sophisticated America, antisemitism has again acquired an ideological costume, allowing people who would never tolerate open racial prejudice against almost anyone else to rationalize their hatred of Jews as politics.<\/p>

October 7th happened. Hamas and other terrorists crossed into Israel, murdered approximately 1,200 people, and took 251 innocent civilians hostage, including Americans, who were among those killed and kidnapped.<\/strong> The United Nations subsequently found reasonable grounds to believe that conflict-related sexual violence occurred during the October 7 attacks and against hostages in captivity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael is not above criticism.\u201d Yet there is an enormous moral and intellectual difference between criticizing Israeli policy and becoming so intoxicated by an ideological narrative that the murder, kidnapping and rape of Jews become somehow less morally important<\/strong>. Israel has been told repeatedly that it must absorb threats, rockets, terrorism and hostile armed organizations because removing those threats might destabilize the region. October 7 shattered that bargain.<\/p>\n

One cannot rationally do is erase October 7, sanitize Hamas, or transform Jewish victims into defendants in their own massacre. That precise moral inversion has become fashionable on the American left.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That brings us to Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres and Hasan Piker.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Torres confronted extremism emanating from his own side, a rare act in American politics. In a letter to Amazon and Twitch, Torres called Piker \u201cthe poster child for the post-October 7th outbreak of antisemitism in America\u201d and accused Twitch of amplifying his rhetoric to millions.<\/p>\n

Torres\u2019s letter cites Piker referring to Orthodox Jews as \u201cinbred\u201d and describing a Jewish man as a \u201cbloodthirsty pig dog.\u201d<\/strong> Torres also notes Piker\u2019s statement that \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter if rapes happened on October 7th. It doesn\u2019t change the dynamic for me.\u201d<\/em> Beyond vulgarity, Piker exposes his ideological disease. When labeling one group oppressors and another oppressed, facts complicating the morality of the story cease to matter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is how otherwise intelligent people arrive at astonishing positions. Rape matters unless it interferes with the narrative. Murder matters except when the victims belong to the wrong side of the ideological ledger. Terrorism is evil except when reclassified as \u201cresistance.\u201d Jews become \u201ccolonizers\u201d and their killers revolutionaries. Suddenly, the most primitive forms of human hatred are dressed up in the vocabulary of graduate seminars.<\/p>\n

Tuning out is easy for people who think shallowly about history. They increasingly absorb their politics through TikTok, X, and algorithmic outrage, drifting into a fringe where antisemitism is rationalized as political sophistication.<\/p>\n

Beyond Israel, Piker famously declared,<\/strong> \u201cAmerica deserved 9\/11.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> He had \u201cno issue\u201d with Hezbollah. Hezbollah is a U.S.-designated terrorist organization with a long history of killing Americans, including involvement in the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing that killed 241 American service personnel.<\/p>\n

The pattern matters. So do current happenings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Piker is becoming more important in Democratic electoral politics. He campaigned for Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.<\/strong> El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens and will now face Republican Mike Rogers in November in a race that could help determine control of the United States Senate.<\/p>\n

Abdul El-Sayed called Piker\u2019s remark \u201cdumb.<\/strong>\u201d Yet El-Sayed has also dismissed criticism of his relationship with Piker as \u201cgotcha politics.\u201d<\/strong> Piker presented El-Sayed\u2019s victory as part of evidence that this movement is gaining national political strength, not retreating.<\/p>\n

Blowback has occurred. The University of Washington recently canceled a Piker appearance scheduled for its 2026-27 Speaker Series. UW said the internal planning process had failed to meet the necessary standard of rigor for university-hosted events and emphasized its commitment to the free exchange of ideas. Piker argued that his criticism of Israel was the real reason for his exclusion.<\/p>\n

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, the former chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, defended Piker on the free-speech issue. She communicated her concerns directly to the university.<\/p>

Let Piker exercise his right to speak while<\/strong> acknowledging that the constitutional and moral questions are not remotely the same. The rest of us have every right to question the political movement in which he is becoming influential.<\/p>\n

Democratic Congressman Josh Gottheimer and Republican Congressman Mike Lawler introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning antisemitic rhetoric by prominent online personalities, specifically including Piker and Candace Owens. The congressmen called on public figures and social-media platforms to reject the normalization of antisemitism regardless of which ideological direction it comes from<\/strong>. Antisemitism is unacceptable from the nationalist right. It does not magically become acceptable when repackaged as revolutionary politics on the socialist left.<\/p>\n

Separate the argument completely from Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s religion. He is Muslim. So what?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Group hatred is stupid, immoral, and not the American way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cenemy inside the gates\u201d is not a race or religion. It is an ideology that has become so morally distorted that it can rationalize almost anything when the victim belongs to the wrong group.<\/strong> It is the idea that America itself is fundamentally wicked, terrorism can become liberation when committed by approved people, capitalism is exploitation regardless of prosperity produced, and history can be reduced to an endless courtroom in which people are assigned inherited guilt based upon identity.<\/p>\n

Piker\u2019s fascination with revolutionary communism matters.<\/strong> Torres noted Piker\u2019s self-presentation in the imagery of Vladimir Lenin. More recently, Piker\u00a0described the collapse of the Soviet Union as one of the great catastrophes of the 20th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That history is worth remembering because political extremism begins by convincing itself that its cause is morally superior enough to suspend ordinary rules<\/strong>. Once that happens, people stop being individuals. They become classes, races, colonizers, capitalists, Zionists, fascists, oppressors, or enemies. Once humanity is replaced by categories, cruelty becomes remarkably easy to rationalize.<\/p>\n

That is what makes the post-October 7 explosion of antisemitism so revealing.<\/strong> We should have seen universal horror at the slaughter of civilians followed by an argument over how Israel should respond. Instead, too many people moved almost immediately to explain why the victims were somehow implicated in their own murders. There is nothing enlightened about ancient tribalism decorated in twenty-first-century vocabulary.<\/p>\n

The Democratic Party therefore has a decision to make. Democrats like Torres understand the stakes better than many Republicans do because Democrats are fighting the battle inside their own coalition<\/strong>. Piker\u2019s politics are moving from the fringe into an increasingly accepted part of the party\u2019s activist and electoral infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abdul El-Sayed\u2019s victory makes that question unavoidable since Piker helped him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I began with the stupidity of antisemitism because the entire subject eventually returns there.<\/strong> Human beings have individual moral agency. The moment we begin assigning collective guilt to millions of people because of their ethnicity or religion, civilization starts moving backward very quickly.<\/p>\n

October 7 happened. The rape, murder, and kidnapping were real. Israel responded. Neither Palestinian suffering nor opposition to Israeli policy justifies antisemitism, excuses Hamas, or transforms the murder of Jews into some morally understandable act of political resistance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That should be a very easy line to draw. Ritchie Torres has drawn it.<\/p>\n

The disturbing question is why so many others still cannot.<\/p>\n
