We just learned that Karmelo Anthony, who admittedly stabbed Austin Metcalf to death in 2025, fantasized that same morning about stabbing someone and claimed to be \u201con the verge.\u201d However, that information never made it to trial because the prosecutor entered into a \u201cgentleman\u2019s agreement\u201d with the defense counsel to leave it out. Cue the outrage!<\/p>

However, the prosecutor made a reasonable decision, and I think that, in 2026, many other prosecutors would have done the same. The fact that Anthony was convicted shows that the prosecutor wisely relied on the evidence he had, rather than opening what could have been a devastating Pandora\u2019s box of racist and violent behavior from the victim.<\/p>\n

Very briefly, the uncontested facts are that, on April 2, 2025, Anthony, black and 17, walked into a tent at a track meet where he didn\u2019t belong. Austin Metcalf, also 17 but white, challenged his presence, including physically pushing him back, at which point Anthony stabbed Metcalf in the heart once, killing him. Anthony claimed self-defense. The prosecution contended that Metcalf’s actions, captured on video, did not justify self-defense.<\/p>\n

In June, a jury found Anthony guilty of murder. The same jury sentenced him to 35 years in prison. Race hustlers point to the absence of blacks on the 12-person jury to claim that the trial was essentially fixed, but it was not, in fact, an all-white jury, for it had three Asian\/Indian jurors.<\/p>\n

The big news last week was that the defense and prosecution had entered into a \u201cgentleman\u2019s agreement\u201d before the trial, in which each side agreed not to produce inflammatory evidence. The now-omitted Anthony evidence went directly to his intent:<\/p>\n

Picking up where the above text leaves off:<\/p>\n

…according to Collin County prosecutor Bill Wirskye\u00a0 who revealed at Karmelo Anthony\u2019s hearing for a new trial today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m low key on the verge,\u201d Anthony said in text the morning of the stabbing.<\/p>\n

Wirskye says Anthony had a history of violence and wanted to stab someone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a text message where he fantasizes about stabbing someone and licking the blood off the blade,\u201d Wirkskye said of Anthony.<\/p>\n

He was obsessed with starting fights, Wirskye added, sharing that Anthony had previously been taken to a special program at LSU for kids who can\u2019t keep their hands to themselves when he lived in Louisiana prior to moving to Texas<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Naturally, everyone who hears that thinks it would have sunk Anthony, especially if he\u2019d testified in his own defense, as he\u2019d been planning to do.<\/p>\n

However, what many people miss is that there was also inflammatory evidence about Metcalf:<\/p>

Austin Metcalf and his brother Hunter Metcalf were once caught spray painting graffiti, including “KKK kill all blacks” and “Heil Hitler,” along with the N-word, and were sentenced to 12 months of juvenile probation, court documents show.<\/p>\n

There are several documented instances of Austin Metcalf using racial slurs in school, and in 2023, Austin Metcalf was accused of bullying a Black student in class.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The same article talks about other incidents of violence, bullying, and uncontrolled rage, including in 2024, one year before he was murdered.<\/p>\n

Let me be very clear here: I am not arguing that Metcalf deserved to be murdered because of his words or deeds during his teenage years. I am also not saying that, when Anthony went to a tent where he didn\u2019t belong and then refused to leave, resulting in Metcalf shoving him, Anthony can now credibly claim that Metcalf\u2019s past acts left him in fear for his life. I think that, on the facts of the murder itself, the jury made the right call.<\/p>\n

Having said that, a reasonable prosecutor knows that, had the case been tried with a bad judge and a different jury, Metcalf\u2019s prior words and deeds could have been a get-out-of-jail-free card for Anthony. Just think of the OJ Simpson trial.<\/p>\n

A 75% black jury, with the defense relying primarily on the race card played against the lead investigator, acquitted OJ. Eighty-five percent of blacks agreed with the verdict. The media were even able to hunt up blacks who agreed that the verdict was a corrective for years of anti-black verdicts, regardless of OJ\u2019s actual guilt.<\/p>\n

More recently, look at Derek Chauvin\u2019s lynching. The facts were uncomplicated:<\/p>\n

George Floyd had a toxic combination of drugs in his system and was already dying when he interacted with the police. Derek Chauvin and the other police used Minneapolis\u2019s own guidelines for subduing him. An angry mob prevented them from moving Chauvin to a more comfortable position or even letting the ambulance through. And yet Chauvin was convicted because the judge let in evidence that he was a bad human being, and the jury was clearly intimidated by the mob.<\/p>\n

Do you imagine that anything different would have happened in McKinney, Texas, if word had gotten out about Metcalf\u2019s uncomfortable, non-choir-boy history? The population in McKinney, Texas, is only 56% white. The remainder are black, Asian, Native American, mixed race, or Hispanic. Imagine the risk if they had been the majority of the jury? This is a county in which Donald Trump just squeaked in with 54% of the vote.<\/p>\n

The wrong jury, combined with information about Metcalf\u2019s past, would have meant either a \u201che had it coming\u201d mindset against Metcalf and an acquittal for Anthony. Alternatively, it could have created an \u201cI\u2019m afraid of the mob\u201d mindset in the jurors and an acquittal for Anthony.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor had a lot of strong evidence about the killing itself, and it would have been an enormous risk to let the defense paint Metcalf as a violent racist who deserved to die. The prosecutor made the right call, and that\u2019s all getting blown away now. Anthony\u2019s push for a retrial may indeed see him with a \u201cget out of jail free\u201d card for his heinous crime.<\/p>
