He spent 26 years being paid to play.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/interstatelogisticshubs.com\/?p=5002\">Woke Hostility to the USA Founders\u2019 Authority<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Every little boy\u2019s dream.<\/p>\n<p>During his almost three decades in the major leagues, he won 288 games with a .555 winning percentage in more than 4,700 innings pitched, with a solid 3.34 ERA, pitching for teams on the right and left coasts, and some in between.<\/p>\n<p>He was a really good player, regarded today as a \u201ccusp Hall of Famer,\u201d who won titles and pennants with his teams.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t earn a World Series ring, but he did participate in three of them, all involving baseball\u2019s most bitter interleague rivalry: the Yankees and Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, it is not just what John achieved on the field. His biggest impact came from what he did as a patient in an operating room\u2014and during his recovery. For that, all of baseball will forever owe him a debt of gratitude: <em>Tommy John Surgery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, it is the replacement of the ulnar collateral ligament, a band that attaches the humerus and ulna, with a graft or tendon from another section of the body or from a donor.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the operation is performed on a pitcher, although it can happen to any athlete who throws too much, exerting too much pressure and stress on the arm.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the athlete blows out his\/her arm.<\/p>\n<p>Before the surgery, this injury ended one\u2019s career.<\/p>\n<p>No options.<\/p>\n<p>No rehab.<\/p>\n<p>No hope.<\/p>\n<p>Then Tommy John.<\/p>\n<p>Playing for the Dodgers, and with a National League-leading 13 wins already under his belt midway through the 1974 season, John felt the \u201cstrangest sensation I had ever known.\u201d John\u2019s arm suddenly went dead. \u201cRight at the point where I put force on the pitch, the point where my arm is back and bent, something happened,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt felt as if I had left my arm someplace else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enter Dr. Frank Jobe.<\/p>\n<p>The operation took courage and trust from both parties. Jobe had to convince John he could fix the problem based on similar tendon operations performed on some polio patients to strengthen weakened joints. John had to be willing to take the risk because this surgery was unique and transplanted a completely different tendon\u2014from his wrist\u2014to his elbow, replacing the destroyed one:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Jobe replaced John\u2019s medial collateral ligament of the elbow, which was completely ruptured, with a new ligament that he harvested from the palmaris longus tendon of John\u2019s right wrist.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Once out of the operating room, with the surgeon\u2019s job complete, the success of the surgery was now in the hands of the southpaw.<\/p>\n<p>John went through extensive rehab, battling not just the usual problems all patients face, but also the likelihood that he would never return to his former self.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/interstatelogisticshubs.com\/?p=4999\">The Red Raider Keeps Coming Back \u2014 And That\u2019s A Good Thing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He worked and worked, and little by little, strength in his fingers, hand, wrist, and arm returned.<\/p>\n<p>What started as exercises such as taping his fingers to hold the ball and throwing it like a kid against a schoolyard wall turned into a full regimen: first pitching and\u00a0batting practice, then pitching in the minors, and finally returning to the big leagues in 1976, almost two full years later.<\/p>\n<p>His epiphany of achievement, though, occurred during one of his \u201cRocky-like\u201d workouts, when suddenly everything came together\u2014the rebirth of his talents.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy John\u2019s indefatigability led not only to a big-league roster spot, but, indeed, a second career.<\/p>\n<p>To wit, the Indiana lefty\u2019s post-surgery accomplishments:<\/p>\n<p>John pitched an additional 14 years and 26 overall in his career, the third-highest total in MLB history behind only Hall of Famers Cap Anson and his peer Nolan Ryan, who each played 27.<\/p>\n<p>John won more games (164\u2013124), pitched more innings, won an additional six postseason games, was named to three of his four All-Star Games, and finished four times in the top 10 in Cy Young voting, including two second-place finishes as the league\u2019s best pitcher.<\/p>\n<p>Yet John\u2019s lasting mark on baseball isn\u2019t his statistics, but his perseverance and willingness to take a risk to help pioneer an operation that saved many athletic careers.<\/p>\n<p>Jobe\u2019s procedure was taught and used by other surgeons, including Dr. James Andrews. Andrews succeeded Jobe\u2019s mantle, and together they would salvage the careers of countless athletes and even future Hall of Fame players like Mariano Rivera (Jobe) and John Smoltz (Andrews).<\/p>\n<p>Baseball owes much to the gifted surgeon and the willing patient who revolutionized sports medicine through their courage, grit, trust, and determination. John\u2019s reward was the rebirth of a baseball career made even better through hard work and risk-taking.
