I was so flabbergasted by New York state Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher\u2019s recent statement that crime, based on \u201cbiological need,\u201d should not be punished, that I overlooked a similarly preposterous \u2014 if more humorous \u2014 part of her statement. Whereas Gallagher did say that the \u201ctrue crime is that there is such incredible wealth disparity in this city that there are people who can be thrown in jail simply for having a biological need,\u201d she did not stop there.<\/p>\n

She called these thefts \u201ccrimes of poverty\u201d and also stated: “People who were stealing things like toothpaste, people who were stealing things like, you know, soap. And that means if you\u2019re stealing those things, you need them.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you steal things, that means you need them?<\/p>\n

Yes, I think we all have watched countless videos of thieves breaking into a store and heading right for the personal hygiene aisle. Who among us hasn\u2019t seen youthful thugs<\/s> the poverty-stricken deliberately bypass high-end electronics, footwear, and apparel to clean, say, a Target store out of Irish Spring and Ivory?<\/p>\n

I challenge anyone to claim they haven\u2019t observed a flash-grab mob break into a shoe or jewelry outlet and head directly to the Dove, Caress, and Zest bars, biological needs running rampant.<\/p>\n

And, for God\u2019s sake, lock up the Dial soap before it\u2019s too late!<\/p>\n

In truth, something that is in ever shorter supply, it appears that most of the low-life criminals I see robbing and looting stores have never encountered\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 let alone employed — a bar of soap, stolen or otherwise. Ditto for toothpaste. If these items are stolen at all, and they are, they turn up next at the illegal sidewalk vending tables\u00a0or at the local fence\u00a0rackets.<\/p>\n

Oh, and if they really want it, New York’s welfare programs already cover\u00a0it for\u00a0them for free. Who steals what’s free?<\/p>\n

Assemblywoman Gallagher \u2014 and those like her — should steal some reason. The ability to perceive reality is a biological need, is it not?<\/p>\n
